Technically they are called "image macros"

A meme is something that has enter the collective consciousness through non centralized means (going viral) to the point that it, and it's unspoke subtext (as mentioned it is typically snark) that adds additional meaning to the text is instantly recognizable through out society

and the 'actchusally' post is that christianity went through a period in the very early church where icons and depictions of jesus were banned. So what we have of the earliest depictions are either esoteric, or from groups that didn't remove the icons or abandoned the place of worship and were untouched until modern day.
