Grats, man, that's awesome. No small feat.

Leela and Stockfish are in another match. Currently Leela is crushing it 6-2 with 29 draws.

So Stockfish still king, but the neural networks are making a comeback. It's fun to watch the matches and think that no human could ever beat either one, because the games still seem to mostly have a logical flow

Kind of curious why they played an Lc0 variant rather than Lc0 itself, given Lc0 won the previous TCEC. Newest season of TCEC is underway if anyone is interested.

Just a shout out that this thread renewed an interest in chess that I lost after high school. I have been religiously watching agadmator YouTube videos. Finally downloaded chess.com app three weeks ago. I haven't been playing people, yet. Just the computer and playing the rated puzzles (once a day since I'm too cheap to go premium). Anyway, I'm approaching 1000 on the rated puzzles and really enjoying the game again. About to start playing other people instead of the computer. If you see HovdaAggie, that's me.

Chess.com is great. There are also some great chess streamers on Twitch. Hikaru Nakamura is super human, treats GMs like breakfast cereal.

I started playing the puzzle rush on chess.com. The scores in the mid 40's are just amazing. I'm looking forward to breaking 20. But I'm rapidly improving and while I have no delusions that I'll ever be a grand master, this thread directed me to the YouTube videos I daily watch vastly increasing my appreciation of the beauty of the game.

Hikaru Nakamura and GingerGm both have very entertaining YouTube channels if you enjoy watching blitz/rapid. They both play aggressive attacking chess

Thanks!! I'll check them out. Agadmator will cover rapid and blitz as well. Agadmator is Eastern European and he unintentionally cracks me up with the way he phrases his English, but also very informative. He loves Capablanca and breaks down a lot of his games from the early 1900s. I'm a better player now than I ever was in high school just from watching his videos.

Even at Level 6, the computer will make a dumb move or not retake a piece when trying to exchange. At lease 5 blunders a game at Level 6. Was just trying to knock the rust off my game for a few weeks before playing actual people.

Between chess, studying leadership/managerial behaviors, and start to studying philosophy, I'm experiencing an awakening that I am ashamed I did not care to explore in my 20's and 30's. It's been invigorating. Better late than never.

Capa was a chess god, but he was an endgame wizard. I just find the Tal attacking style more entertaining.

I'll never get close to his strength, but enjoyed following Jeffrey Xiong lately.
He hit 2703 as of Aug 2019, which is the highest for any player born in Texas.

I met Jeffrey at a tournament. Very nice young man. He will be playing in the championship of the junior speed championship tonight on chess.com

I played a fair amount in high school. Entered our high school chess tournament and came in second losing to the foreign exchange student from Czech. I just have not played in 26 years.

Watching the agadmator videos the last year has REALLY helped me. I'm a better player now than I ever was in high school just from watching his videos.

So I finally played against a human opponent. Won my first two against players around the 1000 rank. Both games I won by move 20, they just prolonged them to mate. I was up three pieces in both games by move 20.

My third game we are on our way to a draw with me playing black.

I am much more aggressive now than I ever was playing in high school.

But not a beginner. Intermediate player. My end game needs work, but decent at the mid game stage. Need to study more openings and understanding the nuances of each. I have a couple that I play - queens gambit and the standard two knights. On black, I'll often go for the Bobby fisher and get my bishop to g7.

The free "Follow Chess" app is carrying the 85th Southwest Open including J Xiong.
Would post more but wifey just ordered me to vacuum the slugs and weasels out of my hair and get ready to go out for lunch.

My 18-yr old hero from Plano, TX did well at the 2019 World Cup held in Russia:

2-0, Igor Lysyj (2596),
3-1, Amin Tabafabaei (2642),
3 1/2- 2 1/2, Anish Giri (2780),
4 1/2- 3 1/2, Krzysztof Duda (2730),
1/2 - 1 1/2, Teimour Radjabov (2758), won $35000. (quarterfinals)

Jeffrey went in rated 2707, so will surely gain points.
Unfortunately, only the finalists qualify for the Candidates.

Edit to add that Radjabov (Azerbaijan) defeated Liren Ding (China) in the finals for $110,000.

The 2020 IM not a GM Speed Chess Championship is going on.

It's been pretty awesome so far. It's fun watching the players scramble under time pressure.

There have been some strong female players competing as well.

Edit: They've been doing more than competing; they've been kicking b u t t and taking names.

Slow but steady.

I've been reading some Silman stuff lately. His material is pretty good.

I got to play in a simul with a FIDE master last weekend. I got crushed, but it was fun!

How about yours?

Man, I would not want to be depending on chess for a living in the days of Coronaviris.
Its tough enough even without all the over-the-board tournaments being cancelled.

Edit - Did ya'll see Jeffrey's draw with the World Champion? On line, fast chess but still....Jefferey was a pawn ahead much of the last part.

Firouzja's queen sac against Giri was pretty cool.

Also, you guys see the Finegold-Nakamura hubbub?

I've seen Finegold conducting chess classes at St Louis and his personality reminds me of Trump...loud and aggressive but entertaining...so my bet is he said something Nakamura objected to...but I don't actually know, so how about filling us in.

ROFL, it's funny you say that because of how much Finegold happens to go out of his way to express his disdain for Trump. Like in this video below.

I don't really know the context behind this, was hoping someone might fill me in here -- he sounds salty that Hikaru is getting popular on Twitch.

Just FYI John Bartholomew and Alina Kashlinskya will face off in the the IM not a GM Speed Chess Championship finals tomorrow at 10 AM!

It should be entertaining. GM Daniel Naroditsky's impressions are hilarious!
