http://christianpress.com/content/entertainment/360-jack-black-leads-a-prayer-to-the-devil-at-the-2009-mtv-awards

The 40-year-old "comedian" Jack Black went on the "dark side" during the MTV Awards praying to the devil. Black, who was promoting a heavy metal video game called Brütal Legend, asked the "Dear Dark Lord Satan" to bless the rock star nominees with "continued success in the music industry."

Black appeared sporting a mullet, wearing a muscle suit, and carrying a larger-than-life battleaxe. It is uncertain whether his Satan worship was a gag or something he truly embraces, but Black has previously made a point of offending Christians - going so far as to appear as Jesus in a video protesting Proposition 8, the California constitutional amendment that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

"I was mortified when Jack Black lead everyone in a prayer to satan. It was no joke," said Samantha Taylor of California. "The audience held hands and did it. I was a fan, but not anymore."

Black made his grand entrance wearing extra muscles and a battle axe.

"During the Awards, I seriously felt as if I were watching a big party celebration that was taking place in satan's den," said the viewer. "It sickened me. I'll never watch anything on MTV channel again. First and last time," said Taylor.

A video of Black's prayer was available on YouTube, but according to Viacom has since been removed due to copyright violations.

His error was in presenting this on such a widely viewed TV program. He should have warmed up by giving the pre-game invocation at a HS football game. Everyone would have enjoyed that.

He's just leading a prayer in his faith, whats wrong with that Thad? Isn't that what you want?

No more offensive than a Christian praying in public.

I'm sure it was a gag knowing Jack Black. I don't think he worships the devil nor was trying to promote devil worship.

There is nothing funny or humorous about praying to satan. I don't have a clue whether he was serious or not but the real tragedy is that people that saw that might be curious about what praying to satan is all about. That road is one you do not want to go down.

If seeing a star praying to Satan makes you want to do the same thing, you are too stupid to be watching tv without adult supervision.

hahahaha, you think people are actually parenting these days? i can tell from experience that parents are not parenting kids. rarely do i see a student whose parents are involved in their lives. it's sad but true.

Very nice opk

Tanya is correct, parents need to be parents and monitor what their kids watch. Mine did with me and my siblings and my sisters monitor what my nephews and nieces watch, much to the consternation oldest nephew.

It was a joke. Get over yourself.

It was definitely a joke, it was the intro to an awards so presentation on MTV. It was offensive to me only b/c it wasn't funny.

Invoking satan is never funny.

It was definitely meant to be a gag.

I would be a lot more worried about MTV's wholesale delivery of every kind of debauchery to America's youth than a joke about Satan worship and rock and roll.

This. It's intellectually dishonest to cry about your lack of "rights" to pray over a microphone, and then want to take someone else's away because they believe something different.

Secondly, what's all this about Christians getting panties in a bunch over this stuff? You will be persecuted for your faith. It's going to happen. Quit whining and deal with it.

Third, I'm going to have to find the video of Jack Black as Jesus talking about Prop 8. That sounds awesome.

Considering the sexualization of the American youth and your statement, I would conclude that the entire population is too stupid then.

He's promoting a video game.

The shock factor coupled with heavy-metal stereotype means he's looking to raise interest and eyebrows.

The hollywood crowd long ago started to use Jesus and satan as punchlines. Nothing really new here in that they would demean for publicity that which other people hold sacred or glorify that which others would find profane.

The biggest problem that everyone is overlooking is that that assclown Jack Black still gets work and is not only allowed, but encouraged to appear in public.

That is proof positive that Satan is truly at work in our world.

Yes, although it does say something about our society that this kind of joke is tolerated. Not that I would want a society in which a guy would be overtly punished for doing something like that; I just wish we had the kind of society in which it would never occur to a comedian that anyone could possibly find praying to Satan funny.

this is awesome... you see Jack Black is an atheist. he does not believe in satan nor does he believe in god... neither exist. lighten up people... enjoy the time you have here because after this... IT's OVER!!

If you claim to be a Christian, even joking about Satan should be considered seriously wrong.

For those that would condone such a thing:
quote:
Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings; 11yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord. 12But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.

Because Christians are so easily offended is the reason why this took place. He took something so extreme that the only possible conclusion is that he is playing to the absurd, but, because of the martyr syndrome of Christianity in society today, something like this wouldn't seem absurd but an attack on an easily offensable religious populace.
csp97
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, I’m sure if Christians weren’t offended by things they believe to be wrong, MTV would be reduced to showing reruns of The Mickey Mouse Club and the Sound of Music.
boboguitar
How long do you want to ignore this user?
My point is, is that christians are so easily offended, that even jokes of the absurd are taken as reality.

You can also see this joke as a double edged sword aimed at christians and fanatical atheists.

Do atheists find this joke to be funny at the expense to offend christians and not even realize that it can be a commentary on the absurd stances atheists have taken against prayer?

If you were a satanist would you be angry that Jack Black is mocking your evil lord, or would you be grateful for the high profile plug?

I think we're giving him credit for too much thought.

I think he did it for the same reason gangsta rappers do what they do: Shock, attention, and ain't I cool?

This. But for some reason I still believe that even if he had been praying to God that christians would STILL have been offended by Jack Blacks actions.

bobo, i didn't lay the sarcasm on thick enough apparently....

I'm saying (in jest) that the "joke" (it's not a joke b/c Jack Black said it, therefore it's 100% jackassical, leaving no % for funniness), b/c the more important thing is that Jack Black still somehow gets work, even though he never has been and never will be funny.

...though he probably does believe in the devil. If not, how could he have nade the deal with him for the fame he has achieved??? It's the only explanation.
