...is student bonfire going the way of the tu series? ...or are we building one for mizzou now?

Before you flame away I am all for the move to the SEC and think it is great that A&M is stepping out on its own...just seems pointless to have any kind of bonfire...and conversely I suppose the tu hex thingy is over, too...

Dating back to the 40's, as old as "the burning desire," the full and original definition of Bonfire included and closed with "[Bonfire is] the undying flame of love that every loyal Aggie carries in his heart for the school."

Furthermore, while Bonfire officially dates back to 1909 (and 1907), it wasn't until 1921 that any mention was made of a "final rally" before the t.u. game. Now we can only guess whether this was or included Bonfire since there was no mention made of it being a part of the "rally" (though it was built). So it is possible that it was as late as 1927 before Bonfire became the "rally." That means that at the very earliest, there were 12+ years of Bonfire being dedicated to the Aggie Spirit, independent of t.u.

It is in that spirit that you may expect Bonfire to continue.

Interesting historical context...thanks.

I'm guessing, though, that in the context of 2012 Aggieland, it is by all reasonable expectations over since the VAST (I do mean VAST) majority of Aggies (especially those that would work on and be a part of it) think of bonfire as strictly "t.u-centric" event

I guess there can always be a Mizzou outhouse on top and a tiger head on the side and a Columbia city limits sign painted black and gold...

I will be interesting to see what happens.

I suppose tu can change the hex rally to have purple candles instead of maroon ones for their newly minted Thanksgiving day rival...

Times a-changing!

If it is of any encouragement, preparations for Bonfire 2012 are already being made.

I have personally seen Bonfire's resurgence from its very beginnings as a trash pile in 2002 (and before) and have since served the fire in various official and unofficial capacities as a current and former student. I can honestly say that in all these years of growth and progress, I have never experienced as much interest in "next year" as I have this year. And I'm not talking about curiousity, but where do I join, will this help, tell me what I can do.

Furthermore, while the burn bans have been disappointing, I'm finding that they have set up the perfect case in support of Bonfire. Over these last two Bonfires, we have all finally experienced that burning to "clear the field" is no cliche. And there has been a tremendous INCREASE in support after these two burn bans.

The next step that Bonfire will take will be to stand on its own without t.u. Again, already the level of support for the Tradition's continuation has been impressive even (and maybe especially) in t.u.'s absence.

It is the Aggie way to persist in achievement, to optimize with alarming efficacy the less-than optimal, to self-motivate for the benefit of others, and to Build the Hell Outta Bonfire.

I hope we'll see you in 2012.

Insightful as always, FtnTXAg. Couldn't have tried to say it any better.

Every time I read Texags and come across some of you snivelling, tradition hating ladies, I lose a little more hope for A&M. Some of you candy-asses clearly got lost on the way to Austin, Lubbock or Waco. Please buy a map and leave. - Buck Turgidson

I'm left to wonder if Mizzou will be our T-Day rival forever. I've read in the football forums that the (new) league has said that the 2012 schedule is meant only to get us through the 2012 season, and is not a model for later years.

Plus I keep hearing rumblings that pretty universally are hopeful that tu may still make it on the schedule as early as next year, albeit bumped from the traditional Thanksgiving day date. I've heard that sentiment from a lot of old Ags and tsips alike.

New waters await, regardless.

If, for example, we had a game against t.u. scheduled for October 5, how would it affect the Bonfire schedule?

This is true, at least for now.
