and students aren't allowed to build; only watch, I hope Student Bonfire CONTINUES to move forward with what we've been doing the past few years.

To all the higher-ups in SB, please keep students involved!

I hope that SB never has to make that decision. Bonfire is about the students, not the fire.

If the university can't see that, they don't need to bring it back to campus.

This has never been done before...

But come on, you really think the Reds would let it die?

if it does return to campus in any fashion (student run or not) there will be enormous pressure on SB leadership from A&M to stop...

If it returns to campus & isn't student-run, I hope we don't give in to that pressure...

if it returns to campus not student built(student run in negotiable) i hope we can continue... i just dont see how we will be able to recruit fish with a fire on campus

You guys need to start talking up a hybrid Bonfire: built with student labor with student first-level supervision, but with overall professional oversight.

Kinda counting our chickens before they're hatched right now... Have discussions, make contingencies. Otherwise its business as usual. Burn is still the 22nd (hopefully to stay thanks to all the rain). Look ahead to the18th and robertson county in 8 days.

if/when bonfire returns to campus, they should let the students who completely missed out on it during their time on campus participate. i.e. me (2001-2005).

Odd, I just thought that you could have participated in the fires that burned from 2002-2005.

and since you are such an old ag with all the experience of old army, you would know these things. Your argument is different that most of the anti-bonfire people here.

If you let him, SquareOne will eagerly tell you that off campus student bonfire is not real because of the feeling that is missing from the lack of the band, the yellboys, and the extra amount of people at burn.

You, one the other hand, said that you wanted to build one, and thats kind of person is exactly the type that particpate in student bonfire now. So you had you chance.

Whether you didnt explain your true thought accurately, or you have other reasons or comparisons to say that "those arent bonfire," or even if you were just trolling like a lot of idiots here, I dont really care. If you wanted to participate in building a Bonfire, you could have, so stop whining. And also, dont condescend to me. It doesnt make you sound smarter, bud.

That's odd...

I started as an undergrad at Texas A&M in 2001 and didn't miss a thing...

Thats because you weren't there when it was there. So, you can't make a comparision.

Keep bonfire going!

Sorry, but I am a bit out of the loop. I saw an article (briefly) where it said Murano was considering letting Bonfire return to campus.

Was that under a condition that students couldnt build it?

If this is the case, could someone post a link...I must have missed all that.

Thanks

I was, I guess that means I can make the comparison. But I am curious, that if you never worked on it when it was on campus, how you can even offer to make the comparison. It seems that your logic is slightly flawed there.

I've worked on Bonfire in 96, 97, 02-08. And no, I'm not still at A&M, but I go down there every year for at least one cut (this year I was fortunate enough to make it down to several).

Yes, it's not on campus/polo fields, does that make it not real? I don't believe it was on campus in 1909, and it definitely hasn't always been on the polo fields. We do hope though, that it does get brought back on campus in a student involved effort.

Yes, it's not sanctioned by the university. It wasn't sanctioned when they tore down the farmer's barn to build one either.

Yes, the band/yell leaders/coach/football team aren't there... in their uniforms. Is this the determining factor for you?

Yes, it's not as massive as it was. But it's a safer design that has been approved by a PE, which is more than can ever be said about any stack pre-99.

Yes, it's built by students.
Yes, it's organized by students.
Yes, it's student's time, effort and energy that goes into building something that is greater than themselves.
Yes, it's the comraderie that is built between people as you each learn the true mettle of the Ag next to you.
Yes, it's the culminating night of burn that is the final piece of all you have worked for.
Yes, it's not just a fire to you, it's so much more, and it will always hold a special place in your heart.

So, is this Bonfire? To me, yes. It still represents everything that I hold dear with this University.

Now, as to your comments and brush offs...
You had the opportunity as a student. It was up to you to decide. You made your decision, so don't slight the efforts of others because you missed out from your own inactions.

The beauty of it though, is that as of right now, it's not to late to learn what it really is like. None of us know what Murano's actions will be, so take the opportunity while it still exists and go down there. If you can't make it out for stack, then at least go for burn. But whatever you do, to a chance to experience it before you are so quick to pass judgement on it.

Amen Crocker00!

As someone who is c/o 2004, I made it my goal to try and see what the "rebel" bonfires were about before I made my decision. Since I had plenty of stories from fellow Ags, I heard of what to expect, things that happened, friendships created and bonds formed.

With that info and my personal experiences, Bonfire is what you make of it. And to say that it is any less "real" than the on-campus version (after having several old bonfire people tell me they felt same), is a slight.

A lot of the older leadership is behind the off-campus bonfire. That should speak volumes.

I cant say much that the two above me havnt. So I will just add my voice and say that if you are looking for a place where the spirit still burns at Texas A&M, it is found at Bonfire.

Ok, I just read the Batt article and while they have been known to screw it up before, this is one takes the cake.

Did they try to contact ANYONE that was involved in 1999 or earlier or are they content to just talk to current students and let them rant about how it used to be? Specifically "Nate's" comment about it would be fine as long as it's not a Corps binge drinking thing [sic]. This could not be farther from the truth in the way Bonfire was run in the late 1990's.

To interview current students and allow (publish) their comments about the way things used to be is like me trying to tell you what happened on the grassy knoll in Dallas in 1963!

Actually, there were two bad articles in my opinion. The one that you mentioned and the one that focused on FCR. Both articles lacked an in depth account of the facts and amounted to "man on the street" interviews that might as well exist in an editorial or mail-call.

Do some leg work and get some facts. I don't take issue with the students having opinions, but if it is not the truth or complete truth, it needs to be followed up with such so that a reader that doesn't know any better doesn't get force fed partial/complete falsehoods.

That goes for both articles.

Crocker, I agree 100%. I was livid when I read the first one and to be honest didn't even read any more. Care to respond to the Batt in any way?

edit... btw I called Egon to figure out who you were...

lol... yeah, I picked this screen name before I got my new nickname.

And if a response to the batt would actually be worthwhile, I'd do it, but I doubt it.

Worst part about the article against bringing Bonfire back, was that the author only quoted freshmen. I'm sorry but how can a freshman, who from the sound of their comments have never been a part of building Bonfire, be considered worthwhile sources?

that part of the article really made me mad, however we can't really expect a school newspaper to obtain good sources
