Also, I never realized that, before he gets on the island, he is talking to his friend and wants to help him get in touch with a doctor about his wife's cancer. His friend acts kinda pissed and says "thanks, Chuck."
Toward the end, after his friends wife had died he just said "I'm so sorry, I should have been here." There is a noticable difference in how his friend takes it, he is happy to hear that. I think what they are trying to convey is the Chuck learned that it is not what you can do for people, it is just being there for them.
