How long do you want to ignore this user?
POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW

My "Islands" magazine came in yesterday and there was a very cool aerial photo of the island where Cast Away was filmed (Monuriki near Fiji).

http://www.davidwallphoto.com/searchresults.asp?g=50

I started thinking about Cast Away and I really think this is a quality movie from start to finish.

Some of my favorite scenes:
- Opening the Fedex packages and saving one to be delivered later (if he ever gets off the island
- His "conversations" with Wilson
- Seeing the eye of the whale in the moonlight
- The line about his rescue party serving him seafood and his appreciation of ice
- The scenes with his fiancé were intense (Corrected thanks to RudyJax)
- Getting directions from the West Texas woman who calls him "Cowboy"
- Delivering the long lost Fedex package
- Looking in the four different directions at the crossroads and deciding which way to head...

My dad and I argue about this movie. He disliked the ending. He said they should have shown him go back with the lady, and shown them dancing in her barn while an Elvis movie plays in the background, as he had found another love.

I tell him he's crazy because that would go totally against the point of the movie. The point of the movie is holding out hope where there is no reason to. Not to hold out hope because something WILL happen, but because something MIGHT happen. I love how it ends open ended on where he whill go. Strikes home the point that he still has a long way to go to getting his life back and finding his place in the world, but he has hope that someday he will know which road to take.

I always thought a good ending would have been for Hanks to have delivered the package, and the recipient to have been home. Then they open it in front of him and turns out to be a satellite phone.

I loved when "Inside the Actors Studio" had Tom Hanks on. When asked about the final scene of the movie and what should have happened afterwards, Hanks says:
"Well what do you think? He turns back around, gets the girl, and has a lot of babies with her".

Would have been interesting to have more after that final scene...but the symbolism and meaning of the ending is good.

Love the movie......... every time Tom Hanks goes home to see Helen Hunt in the rain and she kisses him and says "you're the love of my life" I tear up big time!

Did anyone know this (from Wiki)?:

quote:
Towards the end of the film, when Helen Hunt runs after Tom Hanks she mistakenly shouts "Jack! Jack!", instead of the name of the character "Chuck, Chuck".

Also, I did not realize until I was reading this thread that Chuck and Kelly were engaged....... I guess I had always thought they were married..........

I agree completely.

A simpleton would want to know what happened next to Tom Hanks' character.

Think about physically where the movie ends...A Fork In The Road. Any path can be taken b/c our futures are not yet written.

Excellent movie.

As for the Jack/Chuck thing when she's running in the rain. I think that is false. I remember my mom's friend told me that, so I went home and put in the DVD and listened. I'll have to do it again but I remember that she says the right name, but it's just easy to mistake for the wrong one.

God Bless YouTube.

It's at the 3:40 of this video.

Sounds to me like she says Chuck, and I pretty positive of it. Bu I can see how it's easy to hear it as Jack if that's what you are listening for.

"You're the love of my life." KILLS ME everytime. Man card be damned. Tears flow every single time I watch this movie.

Girlfriend. He never got around to proposing. He hands her a ring box before he gets on the plane and says "I'll be right back." He never asks and she never answers.

Genius how during Hanks' stay on the island, there is no background soundtrack music - just waves.

Yes.

Sweet vindication. I am glad many others feel the same way about it that I do.

I saw this in the theatre with my wife. She hated it. She thought it was tragic and sad, and it was, and then she hated the ending because the story book climax did not come to fruition.

that's why I loved it.

Castaway is for once a movie about a MAN for MEN. Hanks character speaks to other males. It is how we see life. My wife and I argued about this endlessly but her inability to grasp my conclusions, IMO, only makes the point more valid. Again, this is how we see life.

So your great life turns to sh**. You suck it up. You survive. You hold onto the hope of what was good in your life can be regained. It gives you drive to continue on. You overcome hard times and get a shot at your old life. You find out everything has changed. Instead of having a hissy fit you take a good look at all the factors and make a rational decision, as Hanks' character did. Then you do what you have to do and get on down the road. Deal with it, move on. That is life.

Damn, I really loved that movie.

Actually FedEx made a Super Bowl commercial the year after Castaway was released that had an actor (not Hanks) disheveled and bedraggled on a deserted island, gets rescued, and delivers the unopened package. Inside are things like a satellite phone, swiss army knife, etc.

Reading this thread makes me want to watch the movie again. When I saw it the first time, I thought it was good, but nothing special.

GREAT movie!

I've seen on this forum before the popular opinion to bash this movie and call it a 2 hour FedEx commercial. I have always disagreed and appreciated the movie for what everyone is talking about on this thread...his will to survive and the unknown of what lies ahead.

I love the ending. The first time I watched it, I was concerned that they were going to have him turn around and go after the girl and was very happy they left it how they did. It was perfect.

I posted on the "favorite scenes" thread about the escape from the island. It drills home what BigAl said about the soundtrack. For an hour plus, no music until that moment he gets passed the breakers and turns around to see the island fade away. The music really enhances the moment and captures the emotion he is feeling.

My wife cries EVERY time she runs out and says "you're the love of my life". GREAT scene.

One more thing...notice in the scene after that when he's talking to his friend. It is a 4 minute scene and the camera never moves off Tom's face. That is one hell of a monologue.

Underrated? Really? Didn't it (and T. Hanks) win multiple awards? I think it got the credit it deserved.
Jim01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Two Oscar nominations (Best Actor, Sound) and Hanks won the Golden Globe for it.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0162222/awards

Still I think it was underrated. Most people don't even think of it when they think of Hanks bests movies, but I put it right up there with Big, Saving Private Ryan, Philideplhia, etc.

I'm glad I finally found other people who like this movie! I have loved since the first time I watched it. My wife refuses to watch it when it comes on because she thinks it is boring.

I cast a vote for the ending being a good one, too.

One of my favorite aspects of the movie is what he explains toward the end when he is sitting with his friend. He spent 3+ years thinking he would never get off the island, and then, as he says, he's back in Memphis with ice in his glass, trying to figure out what comes next. It represents something that I think we all deal with at some point in our lives.
