Opening Bands: The Subways (missed all but last two songs), Head Automatica, Angels and Airwaves

Let me start by saying I prefered the Head Automatica singer when he was with Glassjaw, and Angels and Airwaves is my least favorite of any of the Blink 182 side projects. That said, both put on excellent performances. I knew only a few songs well between the two bands, but I was still able to thoroughly enjoy the shows they put on. I also say this after seeing Boxcar Racer live and being completely disappointed with the way Tom Delounge (sp) conducted himself. He has greatly improved his performance skills since I saw him last and I was impressed.

Taking Back Sunday is one of my favorite bands out there these days and I have already seen them twice. This time, it was at Relient Arena, and while they still put on an excellent show, they belong in a club setting. The atmosphere felt completely wrong for their style and I was slightly disappointed in the outcome (the same way I was slightly disappointed with the new cd, their major label debut). But they still manage to maintain the energy they've always had, and still mixed in several songs from their previous (and imo, far superior) cds, give us longtime fans a breath of fresh air in lieu of their newer, top 40-friendly style

Granted, this could very well be the last time I see them live (unless they return to clubs for some reason), because the news is out on their talent and many people, especially screaming teenage girls have hopped on the bandwagon, ruining it for the original fans.

i was going to ask about Head Automatica. You cant go into one of thier shows obviously expecting Glassjaw or daryl from glassjaw days. That being said, im looking forward to thier headlining show at stubbs in october....i didnt want to pay money for a TBS ticket just to go watch 30 mins of HA.

they blew until they started making less accessible music that the teenage girls didn't get.

when teenage girls are screaming, they can't hear the music. hence, it doesn't really matter if the music is any good.

Head Automatica actually played a longer set last night...closer to 45 mintues

And btw, the last two time I saw tbs, there were no screaming teenage girls

did Head Automatica split the set between older stuff and popaganda stuff, or focus more on the newer material? if youre familiar....?

TBS def belongs in a smaller environment...I have been to Warehouse Live twice since it opened and it is pretty good for that type of music. I also saw TBS my first time in the Woodlands and it was too big of a venue, but saying that Blink headlined that show and they were better in a big environment.

The Subways would be the band I would be the most interested from that list. They were one of the best peformances from the last sxsw by far. Plus the bass player is smoking hot.

Angels and Airwaves blows. I can't believe I waited in such anticipation for thier CD. What a letdown. Plus the live performances on youtube are horrible and that is coming from someone who actually LIKES Tom Delonge's voice and delivery. He should have just done more boxcar racer instead of cashing in. Ok, who am I kidding get the money check.

Head Automatica is amazing. Its a hardcore vocalist in a pop rock band, writing a song about kids who start bands because they think its cool.

holy s**t, vocalists crossing genres!?

and it doesnt sound like glassjaw? no way!
mazag08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no sarcasm at all. darryl is one of the most prolific vocalists/ songwriters in the modern music scene.

That show last night was amazing. I went for the subways and tbs. I was disappointed the subways didn't play "1 a.m." but i guess they can't play everything. I really think their performance helped them win some new fans. Moving on to HA...they sucked. Daryl needs to learn how to sing along with the instruments. I know he likes to slur his words, but c'mon. He was never on cue with the guitar/drums/etc. Angels and airwaves sucked as well. I especially liked how tom really preached about how people should tell others that try to dictate their lives to ***c off, yet he proceded to make sure we knew what he believes about war and how thats the proper way to believe. Plus, I thought the whole reason behind angels and airwaves was to get away from the immaturity of blink, yet he again proceded to talk about boobs and everything else to do with sex. Moving on to TBS. Wow. Adam's stage presence and live vocals have greatly improved over time. However, I didn't particularly care for the way he talked. I don't know if that's how he really talks or if hes just trying to be funny, but it got old really fast. Other than that TBS was incredible.

sorry to be an ass, but mazag08, are you sure you know what the word 'prolific' means?
mazag08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Prolific:
quote:
Producing abundant works or results: a prolific artist

Darryl has been with two BIG time bands, producing four major label albums between the two. He also has been in something around 5 side projects through his life producing many songs for each and becoming a major force in the MODERN music era.

I don't see how I used the word wrong..

well, you're ok, you just talked about what agood singer he was, and then how prolific he was. i was just pointing that quality has nothing to do with being 'prolific'. but you've now given evidence to him being prolific, so ok.

that's why i thought it was sarcasm. sounds pretty stupid to me.

TBS was way better with their old crew IMO.

eld02: i said that because i hate how "cool" it has become to start a band these days, even though most kids suck at instruments. It seems every high school kid is in an emo band. I just love how Darryl's lyrics in the song "Laughing at You" say something like..

"Welcoming you to cardboard city where I think they're laughing at your band.
Did you have a clue that it was pretty on the gritty bottom of a van?
I'm feeling sorry for you band..

There are some things you gotta know.
They will surround you when you fall.
And they will steal your heaven's toll."

Maybe its just me, but he seems to point out things in his lyrics that nobody else will adress, as well as write his own personal lyrics.

ahh...makes a little more sense, although i'm not sure head automatica has a lot of room to talk on that front (bands sucking). i never cared for glassjaw much either...oh well, to each his own.

I saw the Subways at SXSW too, and while I'm not sure they had any good songs, they were really fun to watch, just 3 of them going off.
