Pearl Jam decided to play crap music for the better part of the last decade because they didn't like being popular. They are now trying to come back, but it really isn't working. Sorry but that tends to cause a band to lose credibility. Soundgarden (Audioslave) on the other hand have stayed popular much longer and still regularly have new songs played on the radio.

Pearl Jam's early stuff was greatness, but their later stuff hasn't been nearly as good.

Put down the crack pipe man. Audioslave is NOT Soundgarden. That's like saying Velvet Revolver is Stone Temple Pilots.

There are only two very legitimate answers on this thread.

Aerosmith

Soundgarden cannot compare to Pearl Jam playing live and I have seen both numerous times

anyone leaving CCR off their list is crazy. just saw them (sans fogerty). they played for 2 hours and my friend who wasn't even really a fan knew EVERY word to EVERY song. they had alot of hits.

i'm not saying they are my fav or even the best, but they shouldn't be left off a list.

Unless I just missed it somewhere ...

I think Tom Petty deserves mention up there with Aerosmith and The Eagles based on longevity and number of hits. Petty never had the decade of crap that Aerosmith's had since 95.
"Pink" is the worst song ever made, and "don't want to close my eyes" is also in the top 5. Can a band with two of the 5 worst songs ever really be America's best?
Also, this idea that Aerosmith's been rocking for 35 yrs is bullsh*t. They were bad ass in the 70's, but drugs, breakups, etc made them non existant for most of the 80s. They've sucked since the mid 90s, so their run was really only about 10-15 yrs.
