This was a drunken discussion on Memorial Day.

I was saying how Journey was the most underrated American rock band of all time and it got into a discussion of best American Band period.

I guess I settled on Fleetwood Mac but considered the Beach Boys in the running.

Some guys were trying to push Hendrix through but I don't think that falls within the parameters of the discussion.

Let's hear them.

Fleetwood Mac was British

The Eagles

KISS or Aerosmith for longevity
Van Halen
Journey

about half of fleetwood mac's members are british. Stevie Nicks and Linsday Buckingham are both American

Aerosmith, Eagles, CCR

They were formed in the UK and existed for several years before they added Buckingham and Nicks.

In "classic rock", Americans are somewhat underrepsented I would say, at least in terms of "great" bands. You have

* Beach Boys
* The Band
* Grateful Dead
* Aerosmith
* Skynard

All good bands, but not in the pantheon of the Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who, etc.

In the last 25 years, I'd say we have a better showing:
* Metallica
* RHCP
* Nirvana
* REM
* Pearl Jam
* GNR
(probably a controversial list, but can't argue all have been huge bands since 1980). Biggest competition from overseas has been U2.

but, my nod goes to the Black Crowes. Hands down, greatest American band. Rock'n'roll at it's absolute finest.

Allman Brothers

Aerosmith is possibly the best American rock band ever. Sadly, they still rank behind numerous bands from Great Britain. I never quite understood why most of the great rock bands came from Great Britain when Americans invented rock in the first place.

Vote #2 for The Black Crowes.

I can't believe Aerosmith has been mentioned several times. Terrible, terrible band.

Creedence Clearwater Revival

End of discussion. No one has more good songs. The quintessential American band.

Van Halen

The list for "best American band" begins and ends with the Eagles.

On the honorable mention list, I put Aerosmith, CCR, and Skynyrd.

Good for Journey, but they are sadly mistaken.

My vote has to go with CCR. Great songs, amazing lyrics, a very diverse sound, and I'll be damned if you don't know most of their songs whether you thought you did or not. One of the only greatest hits albums I would ever recommend.

Also, if you count Fleetwood Mac as American then you have to count the Band and Jimi Hendrix Experience as well.

The best American rock bands from what I can see are:

Metallica (probably the best in the last 25 years)
Aerosmith (their early stuff is greatness, but most of their 90s stuff is total crap)
The Eagles
Lynyrd Skynyrd
GNR
Nirvana
Soundgarden

There are others, but I would put these bands in the top 10.

Ah, don't worry about it. I love those bands, but everytime you get one of these polls, people start naming their "favorites".

Best is Aerosmith. I can't believe someone (meantime) said they're "terrible". Ask any member of Guns' and Roses what they think of Aerosmith. Led Zeppelin asked them to induct them into the Rock Hall of Fame.

Hell, "Dream On" came out in what, '73? You telling me a band that has consitantly cranked out good to very good rock albums for almost 25 years is not the best American rock band? What did we get out of the Eagles, 10 years at best? Not counting endless "reunion" tours.

although they certainly becoming shells of their former rockin' selves in the '90's i would have to agree that Aerosmith is the answer to this question.
