Riiiight. Not too many bands around that won a Grammy on their 16th year of existance AFTER selling over 8M records on their major label debut.
Aah, yes. Grammies and albums sales: the true rubric by which good musuic should be judged.
My problem with Greenday isn't that they're mindless pop. All power to them. if they want to appeal to the lowest common denominator with leftist lyrics and simplistic song structures, that's their prerogative.
I know I listened to Dookie a lot back in the day when I was just learning to play guitar. But about the time I turned 14, I realized that Armstrong has the most grating, soulless voice of almost anyone in the post-punk momvement.
It's not just that, though. It's
this album.
Any time a group of musicians takes it upon themselves to use their fame as a soapbox to proselytize from, it just grates on my last nerve. It was crap when Tool did it, it's crap when Greenday does it, when Jurassic 5 does it, hell, I even tune it out when bands like Trivium and Megadeth do it.
