I saw a discography that showed something like 4 or 5 Beatles albums in 1964, then several more in 1965. Is this right? How could you put that many albums out in such a short time?

According to this site, they were full albums:

Doesn't sound accurate to me.

Early one's I remember from those years were Meet the Beatles, Introducing the Beatles, The Second Album, Something New, Beatles '65, Hard Days Night and I think Help came out in late '65. All that music in such a short period of time and very few bad songs to be found. The early Beatles were greatness.

I count 2 in 63(Please please me; with the beatles), 2 in 64 (hard day's night; beatles for sale) and 2 in 65 (rubber soul and Help!).

They had more cover songs on the first few albums, but that's still pretty prolific.

They had more American albums because some of the albums were mainly just re-treads of earlier albums.

Because of the mania that followed these guys, George Martin has said the studio really pressured them to record as much as they could as fast as they could. I think Please Please Me was knocked out in 2 or 3 days. The amazing thing is, these guys had the songwriting prowess to keep up with the demand.

On the list of American albums, they show the following:

1964:
Introducing the Beatles
Meet the Beatles
The Beatles with Tony Sheridan
Introducing the Beatles (revised song list)
The Savage Young Beatles
The Beatles Second Album
A Hard Days Night
Something New

...there's several more - I just got tired of typing. I saw that in several instances there were overlapping songs, but that's still got to be some kind of record for making records!

Did they just not spend much time touring?

The 1964 releases were the two albums they released in the UK and in '63 and two more in '64. Capital split the four UK EMI releases and made five or six albums - adding a single here or there as filler. The Savage thing and the Tony Sheridan were live tracks they recorded in Hamburg in 61 and 62.

Figuring the Beatles would be has beens in six months, Capital and EMI were going to milk it for all it's worth and release anything remotely commercial in 1964.

They were very prolific and were pushed hard to get anything out the door, but they still toured a lot in '64-65.

The British Albums link from the webpage gives a pretty good representation of what they producd in those years. Add another 10-20 singles during that time.
