On basic comparison Gene, but I think Johnny knew this going into the role, hence why he tried to make his Wonka different from Gene's.

cant compare. Gene did a musical, while Johnny did a Johnny/ Tim Burton movie. Both did a good job, but depending on the type of movie you watch, one will be better than the other. I prefer Gene, but nobody was a better fit than Johnny for this version.
