Is Eddie making those himself? I wouldn't put it passed him, considering that he's custom-striping some limited edition strats for Charvel. They're based on the original guitars he butchered back in the 80s.

After his brush with throat cancer it is weird that he would okay something like that to be made.

It is officially licensed by Mr. Edward Van Halen.

I've got one of these! It burns white hot when you first strike it, but then it spits the flint out with no coherent explanation and then disappears for five years!

Seriously, Ed had cancer on his tongue. I was back stage at the Toyota Center show last Fall and Ed had a cig in his hand the whole time. I don't think he ever smoked a whole one, but one was always present/burning. His alcohol rehab didn't take either. I saw him down a bottle of wine before the show and he had at least another one during.....

I stand corrected on tongue instead of throat, it is still a body part in the path of the smoke.

Sad to hear he has gone back to smoking. It is a powerful habit to break. I've been to MD Anderson before and seen the patients directly accross from the entrance in the corner of the parking garage(the nearest smoking allowed area to the hospital) herfing down, some are bald from their treatments and have a i.v. bag hooked up to them, pretty depressing stuff.

I guess there is nothing more "Rock Star" than getting cancer, beating it and then thumbing your nose at your doctors and continuing to smoke. Oh and selling officially licensed Edward Van Halen Zippo's.

Throat/tongue, if it was far enough back on his tongue it was prolly in his throat too right?

I must admit to being fairly disappointed when I saw him light up. But, again, I only saw him take maybe two or three drags off each butt. He had one stuck in the neck of his guitar during sound check that just burned. He lit it, took one drag, tucked it in to the fret and forgot about it.

I fully expected the drinking, as I had heard that was the reason for him and Valerie splitting. He was still wearing his wedding ring though. My wife picked up on that real quick!

Smoking is STUPID STUPID STUPID! I say this as a former smoker. I watched my Grandfather unzip himself from his oxygen tent, practically crawl to a wheelchair so he could go outside and smoke. Then he'd come back up to his room for a breathing treatment, hack up part of his diseased lung and then go back down for another smoke.

I don't get it. I must not have been "addicted" cuz I was able to quit cold turkey and never looked back. Yet there are people like those at MDA and my grandfather who won't quit even on pain of death.

BTW, Ed's treatment was at MDA in Houston!

SPO, I've seen plenty of cancer patients who keep smoking ("now that the worst has happened, why not?" type mentality; that or just too weak or depressed to quit).

We saw V.H. in Dallas and Eddie was pretty wasted then too. The record producer who we had a meeting with in Austin during SxSW is good friends with Sammy and he said Eddie is in pretty sad shape.I know he didn't play that well during the show. ( better than 90% of the guitarist in other bands, but not up to "EDDIE" standards )

He's frequently left off of "Best Guitarists of All Time" lists under the asterisk "Doesn't play well with others". sad.

On a positive, though completely shameless commercial note, he has re-teamed with Charvel guitars for a limited production run of his famous painted (and repainted) guitar. He's actually doing the tape/pre-paint body work himself. There's supposed to be only about 100 of the actual EVH-assembled models total, going for close to $10,000. Each one will obviously be slightly different, but will follow the specs of his own original in every detail.
They're also doing an "exact replica" model of the original, limited production of a few thousand, for around $3000 each.
