I caught the second half of Red Dragon this past weekend on USA. I was hoping to catch the first half later on but never did.

Can someone give me a brief summary of what I missed? Basically, I started watching it at the part where Graham's boss talks Graham into going back to Lecter to get insight into the Tooth Fairy. This was right before the Tooth Fairy meets the blind lady.

The DVD of Hannibal and Red Dragon are pretty good, especially Hannibal. Should be cheap now on Amazon...worth picking up. Also, Manhunter looks dated, but Michael Mann did a good job....the later 2 movies I mentioned steal from it some.

You missed typical set up: Graham loves his family, his wife wants him to stay in Florida, earlier he was stabbed by Lecter after growing suspicious of him, the Tooth Fairy is weird and lonely.

Manhunter is based on the book Red Dragon, so yes Manhunter and Red Dragon would be very similiar.

I actually liked Manhunter better, but it may have been a made for TV movie and not a theatrical release. (I am not sure)

Red Dragon was made becuase Silence of the Lambs was so successful and everyone had missed/forgot Manhunter.

Manhunter leaves off the last scence where he comes after Will Gram.

If you liked the movies, read the books. They are 10x better, and I LOVE the movies. Especially read Hannibal, as the movie omits alot of MAJOR parts of the book.

What part of "Manhunter" and "Red Dragon" are based on the SAME book did you miss?

Of course some if not all scenes should be EXACTLY the same if they are both true to the book.

Red Dragon was crap compared to Manhunter...

Manhunter is CSI before CSI was ever thought of.

Apologies for the old bump. Just stumbled across Manhunter on Amazon tonight. Got about 10 minutes in and started recognizing character names and scenes from Red Dragon. Never knew it was made into a movie in the 80s. It's really good.

Red Dragon gave me nightmares for years after seeing it; I hate that movie.

The most impressive thing about Ralph Fiennes is that he can pull off such creepy evil dudes, and then play a charming, classy gigolo like M. Gustav

More time elapsed between the last original post in this thread (2005) and the bump (2024), than did between Manhunter (1986) and Red Dragon (2002). Makes you think.

Anthony Hopkins IS Hannibal Lecter. He absolutely owns the role in Silence of the Lambs.

But in Red Dragon he's almost a caricature of himself. Cox plays the role fare more subtlety and it works -- whereas Hopkins made the role cinema famous.

Norton is arguably a much better actor than Peterson, but Norton plays the role like he's reading a script every scene.

Same characters. Same story. Ratner was given A-list Oscar winners... Mann was given character actors from television.

Shows you what a difference directing can make.
