This entire board seems to be stroking what I perceive to be the most disastrous trilogy since Rocky 2,4,5. Just curious what was appealing about those annoying talking trees and then a denouement that involved the gayest hobbit pillow fight in the history of gay hobbit pillow fights. I thought all three were HORRIBLE. Am I on the outside looking in? Best picture? Come on now, does the talking tree get a best supporting actor nod?

Dude, you're the one who put Gattaca (an Ethan Hawke movie) as your number one film. I'd suggest that the taste in movies is your issue...

LOTR is a fantasy epic, and the movie-going public, many who did not and won't read the books, became emotionally attached to the characters. Most films don't accomplish this, particularly on such a wide-scale and over a number of years.

To be fair to Peter Jackson, though, the problems in Return of the King had much more to do with the source material than his writing or directing. He did about as much as he could to make it an interesting resolution without being unfaithful in his adaptation.

If you don't like the story, fine. But give Peter Jackson credit: what he put on the screen is among the best battle scenery, set designs, and costumes ever captured on film.

Sucked? No. Overrated? YES. Especially the first one. I fell asleep in the theater and on my couch when it came out on DVD.

I thought the first two were excellent. The third was good. All three are still a bit overrated, IMO.

And the "pillow fight" Holden talked about was THE gayest scene I've ever witnessed. I still don't understand what that crap was about. I suppose if I ever accidently watched some gay porn, I might see something worse than that scene, but it's hard to imagine. The third film has to be knocked down at least one slot on the 1-10 scale just because of it.

It was more homoerotic than Top Gun, even. I never thought that was possible.

I saw the first one and thought it was almost okay. I went to see the second one for the special effects, but I found it to be boring and didn't even bother with the third movie. I guess I really just don't have an appreciation for the fantasy genre.

Yeah, I didn't care for them too much. I slept through the first one and didn't even think about trying to see others.

i tried to watch the original and had to turn it off about 20 min into it.

i guess this stuff appeals to quite a few people, but i have no interest in it at all.

Listening to Creed is the only activity I can think of that would be worse than watching "Pearl Harbor" again.

At 11 pm every night, my computer automatically plays "With Arms Wide Open". As it fades out, which is cool because iTunes lets you fade songs as they finish, I imagine myself floating into Scott Stapp's manly arms as I fall asleep.

I've said all along that not only are the movies over-rated, but the books were snoozers with a few very strong and vocal followers. I'm glad Tolkien invented the genre, but I'm also glad others came along and made it understandable.

I read them, and for half the series I thought Sauran and Saruman were the same person, but the editors screwed up.

How about being both. I'm not an extreme member of either group but I admit to enjoying both. Love LOTR books and was elated with Jackson's film adaptation.

A Star Trek fan is most pathetic. However, James Tiberius Kirk is the coolest character of the three epics.
