Not to mention the fact that it was named the book of the 20th century.

Alright, I’ve had a day to think about it...I still like them.

What do you think of Sam Rockwell playing him in the movie?

I really only know him from "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind"

I am looking forward to Martin Freeman playing Arthur though. He's perfect.

They're making The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie! Cool!

Who plays Zaphod Beeblebrox, Ford Prefect or Athur Dent is relatively unimportant. What I need to know is who is playing the sexy space cadet Trillian? Come on Tanya spill the beans.

Is there any way to be a more stereotypical movie snob than to list Gattaca as your favorite movie of all time and claim that LOTR was boring?

The LOTR trilogy is one of the best movie productions EVER!!!!!!!!!

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The first LOTR movie was pretty boring.

The second was better

and the third was better than the second.

I've seen them all once and that is enough.

I don't hate or love them.

The second matrix movie however, I hate.

Hey NoACDamnit,

What do you mean that I "lack the reading compression to tell the difference between two major charters"? That makes no sense, Einstein.

Stay with us here, Captain. We're talking Tolkien.

Dr. Mephisto

I hope Tolkien haunts all you haters!

He could take you all in a bar fight.

The movies were great.

The books were better.

Few have come close and almost none have spent longer developing a singular world, history, mythos, languages, cultures, and characters.

I'm betting most of those who hated or were bored either aren't fantasy fans, have never read the books, saw it because of the media buzz, or have little pee pees.

Okay, that last one was over the top, but the rest still stand.

After the Bible, the Lord of the Rings is the 2nd best selling book ever. There is no way you can possibly say the books were not good.

I guess I'm in that category. I enjoyed the cinematography and I appreciated the attention to detail. I thought most of the CGI was well-integrated. Overall, it was an excellent effort. But I just can't bring myself to give a sh*t about the story.

No, he is right. It was the second highest selling book in the 20th century....behind the bible. I think its at the beginning of the latest edition for lord of the rings book.

After the bible it is no where to be found.

Gattaca the book sold more copies then all of Tolkien's combined!

quote:
The Top 10 Bestselling Books of All Time (according to IPL):

1. The Bible
"No one really knows how many copies of the Bible have been printed, sold, or
distributed. The Bible Society's attempt to calculate the number printed
between 1816 and 1975 produced the figure of 2,458,000,000. A more recent
survey, for the years up to 1992, put it closer to 6,000,000,000 in more than
2,000 languages and dialects. Whatever the precise figure, the Bible is by far
the bestselling book of all time."

2. Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung (Little Red Book)
"Chairman Mao's Little Red Book could scarcely fail to become a bestseller:
between the years 1966 and 1971 it was compulsory for every Chinese adult to
own a copy."

3. American Spelling Book by Noah Webster
"First published in 1783, this reference book by the American man of letters
Noah Webster (1758-1843) remained a bestseller in the U.S. throughout the 19th
century."

4. The Guinness Book of Records
"First published in 1955, The Guinness Book of Records stands out as the
greatest contemporary publishing achievement. There have now been 37 editions
in the UK alone (it was not published annually until 1964), as well as numerous
foreign-language editions."

5. The McGuffey Readers by William Holmes McGuffey
"Published in numerous editions from 1853, some authorities have put the total
sales of these educational textbooks, originally compiled by American
anthologist William Holmes McGuffey (1800-73), as high as 122,000,000. It has
also been claimed that 60,000,000 copies of the 1879 edition were printed, but -
since this is some 10,000,000 more than the entire population of the U.S. at
that time - the publishers must have been extremely optimistic about its
success."

6. A Message to Garcia by Elbert Hubbard
"Now forgotten, Hubbard's polemic on the subject of labor relations was
published in 1899 and within a few years had achieved these phenomenal sales,
largely because many American employers purchased bulk supplies to distribute
to their employees."

7. The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care by Dr. Benjamin Spock
"Dr. Spock's 1946 manual became the bible of infant care for subsequent
generations of parents. Most of the sales have been of the paperback edition of
the book."

8. World Almanac
"Having been published annually since 1868 (with a break from 1876 to 1886),
this wide-ranging reference book has remained a constant bestseller ever
since."

9. The Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann
"This tale of sex, violence, and drugs by Jacqueline Susann (1921-74), first
published in 1966, is perhaps surprisingly the world's bestselling novel.
Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, which has achieved sales approaching
28,000,000, is its closest rival."

10. In His Steps: "What Would Jesus Do?" by Rev. Charles Monroe Sheldon
"Although virtually unknown today, American clergyman Charles Sheldon (1857-
1946) achieved fame and fortune with this 1896 instructive religious treatise
on moral dilemnas."

Vander said all-time. Dood after Vander said he was right b/c it was #2 in the 20th century. He is wrong as well.

All time list above includes 5, of the top 10, being written in the 20th century.

This is the first article I came across. It mentions 2 different polls naming it thusly with Amazon poll going so far as to name it the book of the millenium.

Still looking for this title that some literary group gave it although I can't remember who it was.

LOTR is a fantasy epic, and the movie-going public, many who did not and won't read the books, became emotionally attached to the characters. Most films don't accomplish this, particularly on such a wide-scale and over a number of years.

I disagree. I haven't found many people that loved the movies that didn't read the books. I tried reading the books and I did watch all 3 thinking maybe I'd enjoy them. I didn't. As for not enjoying fantasy, I do enjoy some fantasy movies, but these weren't any of them.

I'll never watch them again.

That's your opinion regarding SW Ep I/II. While they weren't as good as IV or V, I thought I/II were good efforts that have done a good job of establishing where Darth Vader came from.
