Okay, so last weekend I'm getting into my car and I put it on my favorite radio station, Rock 101.1 KLOL. Only there's no rock playing from the speakers, its Latino Rap. I figure its some DJ pulling my chain so I listen and the genre soesn't change.

I listen to Walton and Johnson (the best morning show in the USA) every morning. These guys are GREAT! That's how this ties to football too, Walton is a huge OU fan, and Johnson (who does Billy-Ed Hatfield I believe) is a huge Aggies fan... In fact these 2 were at the OU @ TAMU game on NOV 6th.

Clear channel has found it advantageous to get rid of Houston's only hard rock station and replace it with a Latino Station, (we already have like 5 of these) because ethnic-based radio programs get a more targeted audience and suppoedly higher ratings. Clear Channel did not give any warning of the switch over and even surprised the DJs with the switch (told them the night before I think).

So, here's what you can do:

SIGN THIS PETITION: http://www.rock101.info/
please help houston get back its only rock station and the best morning show around.

They told them before the night before, they had been joking for weeks about swiching to spanish radio but i though it was just that....a joke. Walton played football at OU thats why he likes them so much, and Steve Johnson is the most talented radio personality ive ever heard. I will definately sign the petition!

The bad thing is that the guy that owns clear channel is an AGGIE. Good ol Lowry Mays that basically built the Weihner building with all his contributions. The business school is named after him.

Another Aggie connection to 101. One of the first DJ's on 101 was an Aggie outfit C.O. who got kicked out of the Corps (and school) for taking a .45 automatic into East Gate Lounge.

Rock 101 started in August 1970. I believe it was the longest running rock station in the state. What a loss this is. I have friends who's parents listened to 101 as teens. Wow I hate this, we have really lost a Houston landmark. Damn you clear channel.

We're complaining about a radio station? What year is this? Have I gone back in time?

Clear channel did the same thing up here in DFW with 97.1 the Eagle a month ago. It was our only true rock station. Now it is "Sunny 97.1" and started playing freakin' Christmas music on November 1.

Get used to it guys, Radio is moving for the older listner because us younger ones (okay you younger ones) listen to XM Radio or your downloaded cds or ipods. FM radio is slowly going away. Soon radio will be all talk stations and elevator music.

I am an old folk. Well at least the music I like is always called "An oldie, but a goodie."

Anyway, I have XM because I love music and I hate DJ's and commercials. I have had XM for over a year now and I have never had the urge to listen to a local station yet.

it's not just radio that Clearchannel is taking control of....there's also it's influence on programming at performance venues large and small.

Although I do not live in Houston, this is very sad news. I've lived, or spent a large amount of time in many places (BCS, Denver, Colorado Springs, DFW, Austin, Houston) and KLOL was indeed the best rock station out there. The wife and I are driving to Houston this weekend and the one thing I was looking forward to was tuning into my favorite rock station. Guess I'll just have to listen to the XM stations now.

I am sad because there is no good rock station at all in Houston now. KLOL was the best of the bunch. There is a huge marketing vacuum in the 4th largest city in the US.

KLOL was never great, but at least they would play some good ACDC and Van Halen and the like. It was a little tired and repetitious, but it was good to have the variety potential.

KISS (99.5 fm) in san antonio had the same thing happen not long ago. They changed format and made a ton of people angry. KISS eventually returned in full force because people made it clear the new crap wasn't flying (I've always thought it was better that KLOL). It turned out a bunch of suits assumed wrongly they woyuld do more business with something else. They were wrong.

KISS lives.

If you really want good rock, bring back Z rock.

Went to the Metallica concert last night and it is sad to know that in one of the largest cities in the country, that is the last time Metallica will be heard. (Besides on CDs and XM)

I turned on Walton and Johnson in the morning, and I heard something that I can only call some kind of spanish rap. I hate rap; I don't care what language it's in. I am going to miss KLOL. They played some decent rock, even though they tended to play more to the new crowd. (Anything past Led Zep. is the new crowd) As observed, there is a rock vacumn in the Houston area that I hope someone fills.

Long live IRON BUTTERFLY!

Rock 101 was part of a way of life down here in the bayou city. Thirty four years of tradition has to say something, especially in the radio business. Anything we ever did involving manual labor had 101 rockin in the background.

THE WORST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO A RADIO STATION IS BEING BOUGHT OUT BY CLEAR CHANNEL MERCENARY COMMUNICATIONS! Another prime example is Dan Patrick selling 950 KPRC to those guys.

What I want to know is where the clear channel supporters are that are on here, what's their excuse for this one?? More ad revenue on the new latino station I'm sure. I swear CC is so clueless on anything music related. That's OK though, they really don't give a crap about the art or the masses, they only care about profits. They might as well be in the retail business, it's just numbers to them. And spare me the "That's what a business is supposed to do!!" crap, they can do both they just choose not to. KLBJ in Austin has survived for decades while still playing decent amounts of local music even, something that CC is again clueless about. It's all about homogenization and bottom lines. That's why they have Ticketmaster to screw you as well.

If you want to keep up with where W&J might end up:

Be careful about navigating beyond the first page at work... I don't think they have any naughty pics on the first page.

Bill's signature reminds me of yet another reason to mourn the loss of 101 - they were the only radio station I know of who would play Black Label Society!

While were on the subject of format changes, anyone mind if I shed a belated tear for FM 100 changing from "Album Rock" to C&W back around '79 or '80. IMO, KLOL was always second fiddle to those guys.

I go back to the Stevens & Pruitt days with KLOL (even farther back when they were Hudson & Harrigan on KILT!), so I'm definitely one of the bluehairs here. Many a morning was spent trying to negotiate Houston traffic while laughing my butt off at those guys.

Since I moved away from the area a number of years ago, I only heard W&J on my infrequent travels into the Houston area & did get a kick out of 'em.

It's a crying shame that the shift in demographics seems to dictate format changes; KLOL's rock format will most assuredly be missed.

We need another tejano/conjunto/hip-hop station on this planet like we need less lanes on 610.

I like Tejano, Conjunto, and Mariachi music.

But isn't Mexico considered a third world country? Isn't rap a type of communication for gangbangers, gangstas, and gangsta-wannabes?

If Clear Channel is set on destroying America, they should just donate their earnings directly to Al Queada and the various Mafia organizations (Russian, Mexican, what have you).

LMFAO!!! THEY TURNED IT INTO A TEJANO STATION!!!!! I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!!

Its not tejano, its (and this is the actual term they used in communications with their advertisers) "hurban" (hispanic urban music). They deem this to be the big growth target demo with second and third generation hispanics. The djs will speak "spanglish".
