Philip Seymour Hoffman's first acting credit was in S1:E14 ("The Violence of Summer") of Law & Order and as an added bonus his character's defense attorney was played by Samuel L. Jackson.

I think it would be hard to find a dramatic TV actor who hasn't shown up on L&O. The list of who later became stars or at least recognizable has to be 3 digits.

Miami Vice was the 80s version of this.

Coincidentally, the hypnotist they brought in during that episode is also named Philip Hoffman
