Wow. This one hurts. There aren't many legends left from my childhood anymore, and she was one of them.

Cannot think of anyone who even comes close to matching her as a person. Wasn't a huge fan of her music, but appreciated her hits. But, Man, as a person - so great. RIP!

I remember reading that when she first moved to Nashville she was so poor, she would walk hotel hallways and eat leftover room service food that had been left in the halls.
She was the absolute embodiment of strength, and grace, kindness, and heart, smarts and work ethic, beauty and humor.

One of the truly great ones, love that she was who she was with no apologies. She will be missed, and love hearing the personal stories about her.

Do you manufacture your own cars for transportation?
Do you perform your own surgical procedures?
Do you raise your own bovine for food?
Humans have been know to outsource those functions for which specifically they're not trained.
I quit authoring my OWN resume many years ago when finally it dawned upon me that I couldn't be objective enough with authoring a document so personal, and for which so much was riding on. A former VP of mine once told me "You don't get a second chance at making a great first impression". That sealed it for me.
Tonight finds me at the Hollywood Bowl to see Dolly Parton. I had thought about staying home, throwing on a CD, and singing to her material... but I'm not good enough. I sprung on tickets and figured I'd let her do the singing. She is much better at it than I am.
And yes, I really am going to go see Dolly. She Rocks.

Dolly is such an icon but aside from guest appearances in others' songs I had not listened to her music in a long time. Just listened to some on the way home, I never realized how much I like her "I will always love you" better than Whitney's cover. Such a classic 60s sound.

Don't forget about the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which mails one free book a month to children from birth to age 5 - that literacy program provided free books to children all over the country. We all lost a true treasure today. RIP Dolly!

While Dolly achieved super-stardom after breaking away from Porter Wagoner and recording more songs that were pop music influenced, I guess my favorite works of hers are from earlier in her career.
She could flat out write and sing heartfelt straight on Country music, with Coat of Many Colors perhaps being the best example.
But doggone, have you ever heard Down from Dover? She spins a tale of an abandoned mother giving birth to a stillborn child, and it's absolutely heartbreaking. Deep, deep stuff. No bro' country there.

Been watching more than a few Dolly videos, and I get a kick out of the ones where she does another person's song with them, or other superstars get to sing with her on one of her songs. And it always seems like such an honor for that other person, understandably so.
Dolly was the person that other famous celebrities "freaked out" about meeting and I think that speaks volumes about her reach.
It's all a little silly though because she is the kindest and most welcoming person in real life. She instantly made you feel like family and would be shooting the **** with you in no time at all.

Hits close to home. I found out a long time friend and former bandmate of mine passed away as well. Coincidently this is him with Dolly some years back
