Another rocker has moved on. Frank Beard, the drummer for ZZ Top has died. The trio is now down to one remaining original member. They're still touring, but when Billy Gibbons goes, this band will be done touring. This won't be one of those "no original members" situations, but I don't blame Billy for keeping it going in the meantime.

Frank could lay down a beat that was pretty incredible, though. Its a big loss for the classic rockin' world.

RIP. His last name was always ironic. What I remember about him when seeing them live was that he was always just heads-down drumming. No frills.

Givin' ole Frank a thumbs up. Practicing to his stuff as a very young "drums" made me a better drummer. And it was fun. Thanks man.

The simple fact that 3 men made the music they did will never not be incredible to me.

I recall a time where his pistol fell out of his boot and shot himself.

I've seen them live a few times. Its almost magic that so much sound comes from 3 instruments and two singers. It's not just higher volume. The unique mix of the drum style, heavy bass, and guitar tone and style makes the sum greater than the individual parts. They had a secret formula.

Bummer.

It was amazing to see the full band play La Grange in my hometown of La Grange at the Fayette Co. Fair back in 2015.

Loved hearing Frank talk, he probably had the thickest Texas drawl of the 3.

I remember this concert. Sitting in a field. Helicopter arrives with the band. Deguello was the new album. They started with their cover of I Think You. Some concerts you just remember…

Hoping Billy and company make it to the Woodlands in October. I've got tickets for the Cheap Trick ZZ show. I'm actually more excited to see CT but that would be a cool night of nostalgia for sure.

I saw them with Bad Company and Cheap Trick a few years back. They had more energy in their 70's than any I've ever seen

I was lucky enough to be the same age as Frank Beard's twin boys and ended up on Coach Beard's Little League team for three years. We got to practice at his Top 40 Ranch that has a baseball field on it. As kids we just thought he was a cool dad with a baseball field and a barn with arcade games in it. It wasn't until later that we fully realized how famous he actually was. He seemed like a pretty down to earth kind of guy. R.I.P. to Coach.

My dad wrote their insurance policy for a year during their eliminator tour. Pretty cool!

He was born in Frankston. Drove through there a couple of days ago and was telling the family that he had just withdrew from the tour for health problems and was hoping he would be able to rejoin them soon. Anybody know what the problem was? Cancer? Heart? Liver?

A few years back I was driving over by his place and he came flying through a stop sign on his golf cart, no slowing or nothing, just full beans. His hair was blowing back in the wind and he had a big goofy smile on his face. I still chuckle when I look back on that.

They played at Galena Park High School in 1971. My dad was principal. The show was to end at 10PM. At 10:15 dad ordered the sound guy (a high school kid) and the lights guy (also a hs guy) to kill the power, turn on the lights and sent everybody home.

Wish they would've come through Montgomery all the times I've been out at AU. Was supposed to see them tonight, he was truly a master of the drums.

Then he called them all 'Slackers'.

It's funny, he was already in his 60's at the time, and grew to like their music.
