That was… good? Decent?
All I know for sure is that it's weird as hell, over the top, and ventures into caricature/cartoonish territory more than I would have liked.
But it's also incredibly unique, compelling, and never boring, while it looks amazing, and the eccentricities are actually pretty damn funny at times. Especially everything having to do with Skyler Gisondo's character, who stands out nearly as much as Pattinson.
It's just… if you're going to paint Hansen in this light (which is totally fair game, IMO), you also have to explicitly show WHY, with tangible, concrete examples, his approach was problematic at times, re: the numerous criminal cases involving the suspects that were thrown out/dismissed due to the show's shenanigans, the fact that only 40% of the arrests made during the show resulted in actual convictions, etc. Yes, the movie clearly shows the cost of hubris, is in no way empathetic toward pedos, and the final act serves as a warning of sorts, but also… not quite?
All of that said, the performances are fantastic, there are a bunch of fun cameos, and I'm 95% there was even an "A&M" quote/reference in the final act, which takes place in Texas. Overall, it's absolutely worth seeing. If you're into the weirdness/nuance, I'd say do so in theaters. Otherwise, wait for digital/streaming.
