Finally saw this and loved it. The ending was kind of head scratching and felt like they didn't really know what to do and said "eh that's fine" but I didn't hate it.
Cregger is so damn good. What a rise out of seemingly nowhere. Can't wait to see what he does next.
Also I saw this movie in Screen X - its where the screen continues to wrap around you on the sides of the theater. I wasn't too sure about it at first, and probably not something I'd seek out a lot... but it was pretty perfect for this movie, and definitely helped with the video game feel.
What's the plan for the future of this franchise? This didn't really feel like some big new series kick off, and it doesn't sound like Cregger has any plans or desire for more... but the ending sort of left the door open? And I don't know any video game franchise that would look to do a standalone film.
Cregger has said he won't pursue directing a sequel but the studio would be dumb not to. I read in an interview somewhere that his story sets up Austin Abram's character as a villain (some monster in the game maybe?). Not like a "Darth Vader"-esque antagonist but just a level boss monster.
Basically Cregger's entire goal was to give the perspective of the zombie apocalypse from an NPC's point of view and deliver some substance to the background of the story so the studio can take it from there.
