This movie should have been so much better than it actually was. I have never seen a movie with so many blatantly obvious continuity errors that between its critical acclaim and TCs glowing review that I wonder if I missed the whole point of the movie. In the end, I might be the only one that was rooting for the impossibly large stealth snake to strike in the kitchen and put us out of our misery.

The only redeeming thing that I can say about the atrocious acting is that Anne Hathaway stood out as a truly unlikable character in this movie.

To me, this movie had so much promise to it, but what a terrible way to end the summer. Holy hell that was not good. 2 out of 5 Steve Winwoods for me.

I could not give two sh**ts about reviews. The premise seems out there, but it's freaking dinosaurs eating people. Going in the morning to the local Cinemark.

What do you mean by "continuity errors"? Like little editing mistakes? Or plot related? Either way, neither registered for me at all. I'm not saying they weren't there, I'm just confused by the statement.

As for Hathaway's character, I kind of get where you're coming from, but not really. Mainly, I found the kids to be such duds, and Ewan McGregor to be so miscast (IMO, he never feels like an American when playing one), that by default I ended up liking Hathaway's character the most, if only because she at least has a plight, a point of view, determination, etc. I just thought it was a really good performance too.

So you guys are saying that at no point Obi-Wan takes a lightsaber out to fight the dinosaurs?

Ha, would have been incredible.

Considering the year it takes place - 1982 - and the age of the son, they actually could have very easily had a quick toy lightsaber gag with McGregor at some point. Distracting? Maybe. His character is just so vanilla he needed something.

As out there as the premise is, they actually do a decent job of trying to explain it - at least more than I was expecting - while still keeping it vague enough. They also do a REALLY good job teasing/leading up to the dinosaurs themselves. Again, the character work in act one is pretty standard/cliched/thin, but the teasing of the conceit, the little reveals here and there, and the plotting/pacing until the dinosaurs finally show up, is excellent. Then, from that point on, the movie flies by and basically never lets up until the end.

Content deleted after pointing out errors to answer previous question. Basically, this movie sucks.

As a fan of Lost, I expected better from Bad Robot/Abrams. Others may love this and given the critics score from rotten tomatoes (currently 84% to a 74% fan score) I just don't get it. The more I think about how awful this movie is the more it pisses me off. What kind of wimpy father would feel comfortable taking a polaroid selfie with a doggiestyleasaurus in the background? Really?

That was why I mentioned spoilers in my comment. You asked, I answered why this movie sucked and now deleting.

The best part of The Martian is when Sean Bean explains what the Council of Elrond is.

The worst part remains WTF Kristen Wiig is doing in that movie.

Beyond the eight or so points that I previously mentioned….it was par for Anne Hathaway's character that she let herself and her two kids die, but saved the husband that she could not stand.

After I rank the movies that I will see in 2026, this one will most likely only be above the Iron Lung, but we will see how Beekeeper on a boat and F1 Alaska Boogaloo with a dog goes. I will not see Tom Cruise running on a glacier.

I don't think you and I saw the same movie. Also, you're completely missing the point of a character arc.

There were some moments where we were all groaning at the decisions some characters made but I think overall it was fun. Another refreshing non-sequel movie to see. The kids enjoyed talking about it on the way home.

I agree that we didn't get the same thing out of this movie. I need to learn to suspend disbelief completely when it comes to dinosaur or superhero movies. Things that I perceive as lazy in a movie such as a top billed star unable to hold an accent from scene to scene or a seemingly normal person being able to handle a sledgehammer like Thor against a large dinosaur, are enough to take away enjoyment of the movie. I cannot excuse it, but I am glad that others can.

I thought Anne Hathaway was in a good redemption arc right up until the final cookout scene. At that point, you are reminded why she was so unlikable at the start.

I'm with you man; I didn't get this one at all. The dialogue was so clunky, it felt like watching a group of kids playing pretend on the playground. "Hey, watch out kids, there's a dinosaur right there, let's all run away so it doesn't eat us!"

The dinos were really fun, but I didn't get the vibe. I thought it was trying to be a Spielberg-y action drama, then I laughed so hard at "that" Ewan moment I started reevaluating, wait, is this a b-movie kitschy camp comedy? For me it was too melodramatic to be the former, and not tongue in cheek enough for the latter.

Just an awful movie. This is the End is a cinematic masterpiece compared to this garbage.

Penelope to whatever Hathaway was in this was just an awful choice. With that said, the Academy will probably nominate her for both films.

Leaving the theater yesterday I had no idea the movie would be this divisive. At least here on the board, as most everyone else I'm seeing seems to really dig it.

I get that. Since I was born in 1971 and was 11 when this movie was supposed to take place, I feel a little more guarded about my generation than you and other people do. When they get the song wrong near the start of it all and it ties in more with 1987 than 1982 you start to look at all of the other glaring issues and no longer look at it as a nostalgic Dino flick. Then it just becomes a humongous pile of backyard Dino dung at that point.

I know Valerie by Steve Winwood in tbe garage made me raise my eyebrows. I think technically it was released in 82 (not until the fall, where this was July in the movie). But I always remember/place that song from 87/88 timeframe in my memory; I think that's really when it took off.

Valerie by Steve Winwood. While yes it did come out in 1982 it was obscure until it became a radio hit in 1987 when I was getting my drivers license. Other nostalgia invoking songs from 1982 that could have worked so much better were: Tainted love, I love rock n roll, or Jenny 867-5309.

To me it seemed like they asked ai to find a hit song from 1982 and this was what chat gpt spit out. Technically true but about as effective as a screen door on a battleship.

I have spent too much time in this thread. I am gonna make like a tree and get outta here.

I wasn't trying to play gotcha or argue, I really don't remember when that song was popular. I actually remember it for being sampled repeatedly in a song about 20 years ago. That video and track was used in the movie Warfare last year.

Ehhh, maybe a little nitpicky, but when a movie is intentionally trying to recreate a specific era as a means of nostalgia for a portion of the target audience, then little details like this will immediately be caught by that target audience. I likely would have noticed it, too, and immediately realized it was out of place in 1987. How much you let it bother you, well that's up to you.

I just got home from seeing this one. Certainly, there were plenty of things to nitpick, but all in all, I had a good time at the movies.

Probably my favorite thing was the Back to the Future reference in having them return to the future a few minutes ahead of the time orb thing, which allowed Anne Hathaway to undue all the bad stuff that happened in Dino-Land. It wasn't an overt reference, but I immediately made that connection.

Good dinosaur action once they got to Dino-Land. Some really stupid character decisions especially going out at night to look for the dog, but 13-year-olds aren't known for good decision making. Overall, a fun popcorn movie.

I would not have recognized the song as being inappropriate for 1982 had it not been for this thread, but that didn't take me out of the movie in any way. I enjoyed the Michael Gia???? score quite a bit. And I felt like I was being chased by something was teeth as I left the theater, much like when I left the theater after seeing 1997's Anaconda.

Sorry, had some trouble with the embedded tags for sp and italicizing

This might be my favorite Jurassic Park since Jurassic Park.

Let's get it out of the way, KABD Kids Always Be Dumbassing

I liked the conflict in their marriage. He is pretty milquetoast as a husband and she hits at it when talking to the neighbor about how he wouldn't talk back to him. But she saw the lengths he would go to protect her and the children which led to that growth. His death was both simultaneously shocking and hilarious..

She did basically pluck the husband and all of those people out of time and created a branch. I have to wonder how I would feel in that position. This is clearly his wife and kids, but also not and they were sent back to die. It's ****ed up and I kinda like it, it is an absolute Twilight Zone Ending.

What I love about this movie is the filmmaking on display. It is very Amblin, the scene where he is running and the dino is on the other side and stuff keeps getting knocked up in the air. The quick blink and you miss body segments of dinos as they move between buildings. So much stuff is happening outside the focus of the family and it is really well done.

I don't need a why. Spacetime bubbles be doing spacetime bubble shenanigans and that is all I need.

Also **** no on the giant snake. I go to a lot of horror films and that sequence might be up there for me.

I liked the movie. Some cool ideas and great moments.

That said, I think it struggled with tone and it needed a rewrite or some script doctoring. Other than a couple of scenes mentioned in spoiler tags, there wasn't enough tension in places there should have been. There was just something off about it that I can't put my finger on yet, having just seen it.

Didn't help that there was 25 minutes of previews, some lady showed up late, tripped on my recliner footrest and spilled her $50 worth of junk food, and a teen jack wagon tried to entertain the entire theater with comments.

I am a big Ewan McGregor fan, but I don't see why he does movies like this. Doesn't seem like his wheelhouse. Maybe it was a paycheck.

I was curious so i googled and discovered that it was filmed over two years ago in the spring of 2024. I know this is pretty common practice but it's still kind of crazy to me.

It was originally set to release on May 16, 2025.

But that summer Warner Bros also had...

- The Accountant 2
- Final Destination Bloodlines
- F1
- Superman
- Weapons

So, for whatever reason, it got pushed as a result and Final Destination Bloodlines took its place. Also, Weapons was originally an early 2026 release, but tested so well, and was completed in time, that they moved it up to August 2025. Basically, WB had two big release date shuffles within a couple months, and Oak Street is the one that got pushed the most. Who knows, maybe they needed more time due to all the dino effects, because it too tested well initially.

Very enjoyable film. Caught the matinee today and it was full. Run time was perfect. Not sure what everyone was wanting out of this. I thought it delivered what it was trying to do.
