Yeah, it's not really Rock and Roll People anymore. It's really anybody who plays just about any kind of music. Wu Tang Clan is about as much Rock n Roll as John Phillips Sousa…

But, who do you think gets in this time?

Here is the list of nominees otherwise the convo will divulge into people naming acts not up for selection. Ultimately, my take is WHO CARES. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame carries as much weight as the WWE Hall of Fame. I think all of the nominees belong. Yes I'm aware they aren't all rock acts. It stopped being the Rock only hall decades ago.

The Black Crowes
Jeff Buckley
Mariah Carey
Phil Collins
Melissa Etheridge
Lauryn Hill
Billy Idol
INXS
Iron Maiden
Joy Division / New Order
New Edition
Oasis
P!nk
Sade
Shakira
Luther Vandross
Wu-Tang Clan

This will be a spirited discussion, but I agree with what everyone is about to say. The Rock Hall of Fame is now diluted and meaningless. Its not a bad thing, it just means that the heyday of rock is not currently the top of pop music like it was from the 60s through the 90s.

I keep my own personal rock hall of fame tucked away inside my head. I limit it to 10 bands:

Elvis
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen
AC/DC
Guns 'n Roses
Eagles
Queen
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Its nice that Run DMC, NWA, Tupac, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, and Dolly Parton get to hang with my personal picks in the real RRHOF, but Rock and Roll they are not.

That's a pretty good list. My only change would be replace Tom Petty with The Who

Don't know what the criteria is. It took rush and journey a long time to get in. Don't understand why Styx or reo speedwagon are not in or even in consideration. I mean, all 4 were headlining major stadium shows in the past. Their songs are staples in classic ROCK. Granted the last 2 have personnel issues, but so what. It's about the music that was made.

Very good suggestion and totally justifiable. I just wanted to keep at least 50% of the list American. I'd consider keeping a top 12 and adding Creedence.

What a joke! My guess

Mariah Carey -based on album sales and still gorgeous
Billy Idol - with x and solo work plus back touring
Iron Maiden - to say were still rock and roll
Oasis- album sales and reunited
Wu-Tang Clan-dei

It really is a goofy concept, but if you're going to have one, Collins, Idol, and Maiden should already be in it. Probably INXS, too.

I always like the whole "diluted hall of fame" thing. Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye were in the first hall of fame class. When i think of rock and roll, neither of those names comes to mind.

Iron Maiden, Phil Collins for his solo work.

I wish they would consider the Alan Parsons Project.

Ah okay. I should pay attention. I thought it seemed pretty ridiculous that they wouldn't be in there.

I like your list. I know I'm probably in the minority but was never a big fan of GnR. Would personally swap them out for ZZTop

So conceivably Mariah Carey and all she wants for Christmas could get into the HoF before Iron Maiden.

3 Dog Night has never even been nominated. Said they didn't write enough of their own music

You know, like Elvis and Linda Ronstadt…

I'm a little iffy on INXS. I'm not completely sold that they are HOF worthy.

Crazy that Collins isn't in . He owned the 80's.

Problem with Maiden is, they don't want to do a broadcast with a 3 of Maiden songs at the ceremony. Be like doing 3 Phish or Tool songs. Massive cult audience, songs that don't resonate to the masses (HBO broadcast).

Are you under the impression that most Iron Maiden songs are 10+ minutes long? If it's a 3 song line up, I'd guess they might go with something like Killers, Run to the Hills, and Wasted Years. All 4-5 minutes long. And that's a case to keep them out? Because that would be some massive BS if it's all about who has the most mass appeal for an HBO audience.

Would obviously replace The Beatles with Green Day. A much better band.

Jeff Buckley

A lot of these are questionable, but was Buckley known for anything other than his cover of a Leonard Cohen song most of us only heard when Marissa was killed by Kevin in the O.C.?

Exactly. People act like this "dilution" is recent. I went to the RRHOF over 20 years ago, and there were plenty of non rock bands in then.

My prediction is Maiden gets in under the Musical Excellence award, same way Judas Priest and Randy Rhodes got in. Didn't have the votes, but there's a way to "back door" bands in. Not a Maiden fan, but it's asinine to ignore how big they are worldwide. Same for the Scorpions.
