Goldeneye was an excellent reboot of Bond finding his place in the post-Cold War environment, and Craig’s Bond rebooted once more for the post-9/11 world. (2/4)
But “new backstory” could simply mean updating so timelines make sense. He could still have a naval background, but now have experience as an SBS operator in Iraq/Afghanistan. Just giving new details without making it a full-blown origin story. This would be totally fine (4/4)

Hmmm, the SAS was founded during WWII so it could still be set in the original Bond timeline, but that story does make it sound guaranteed that this new version will be set in the current time. Did we already know that for certain, or is this the first implication of that?
Bond doesn't need a "backstory". It's a pretty set formula. It just needs a good Bond, a good/hot email foil and a well written villain. A good opening song and opening credits go farther here than anywhere else.

We don't know for certain that it's set in present day, but I would be shocked if it wasn't. Considering period pieces cost way more, and Amazon is looking to make a whole universe out of this iteration. Plus, Villeneuve just doesn't seem like a period piece guy to me. I'd bet anything he goes modern.

The Bond movies have always been current era for when they were made, with current technology* ever present.
The second film, From Russia With Love, featured 8mm movie film as a plot point. That was what was available in the 60s when the movie was made. In later movies, we've seen things as modern as stealth ships (one of Brosnan's movies, don't recall which one). Helicopters have shown up in various Bond movies - in those early Connery movies such as From Russia With Love and Goldfinger, we saw MASH style choppers, whereas in Dalton's Licence to Kill, we saw Coast Guard helicopters that were in actual use in the CG at the time.
So I don't believe it's surprising that the new Bond movie(s) will be set in current time. But as such, the character's back story must change, otherwise the character would either be dead or approaching death, given his WWII backstory. If they move the military backstory to, say, the first Persian Gulf War era, that will be fine. If they give Bond tits, that's not going to work.
* Moonraker is the outlier, with laser guns, space soldiers, etc

I've actually been hoping they'd do a period Bond reboot of sorts. Go back to the 50s or 60s with actual history and kind of play around there. Would kind of remove all the modern politics and need to be cutting edge. For instance, if Bond takes on AI, it'll be a yawner of a villain. No one has been able to make that compelling yet, so I see the temptation, but maybe it just isn't compelling?

Agree that a period Bond would be great, but I'm not terribly bothered by updates to his backstory to fit the times. Bond needs to a) be British, b) be male, c) look good in a suit, d) be hyper-competent, and e) have some sort of entanglement with one or more beautiful women.

I'm still struggling to envision a Bond movie shot in Villeneuve's style. I love his movies, don't get me wrong. Sicario would obviously be the closest comparision we have to imagine what it would look like, and while Sicario is one of my favorite movies its simply not a "Bond" type of movie.
Villeneuve directing it combined with who they pick will make this a very interesting project to track.

Slow Horses is a fantastic show, but trust me, if you had seen it you'd realize he's an absolutely horrible choice for Bond. And I agree, none of the names mentioned to date have piqued my interest.
I'm also not sure whether or not to be worried about the producer's recent comment that...

These days I just get worried when Hollywood says they're doing something different with a beloved established character or story.
To be fair, Craig was different. He was the first blond haired Bond and that was a big deal. People weren't sure how that would go over.
I'm seeing a number of people saying Lowden is "too old." At 36, they're probably right, if indeed Amazon/Villeneuve really are leaning more young. Same would go for my current favorite, Callum Turner, who's 36 as well.
I just really, really hope it's not Jacob Elordi. He's 29 - probably the sweet spot they're looking for age-wise - but the guy is just too drab/cool for school and also too damn tall at 6'5". Yet his name keeps coming up.
At this point hopefully they just go with an unknown.

All I know is this... between Amy Pascal producing (she ran Sony Pictures for years, produced Project Hail Mary, all the latest Spider-Man movies - live-action and Spider-verse alike - along a ton of other great stuff) and Denis Villeneuve directing, I have faith they'll make the right choice.
To that end, for the record, every name we've heard so far has only been rumored. Sure, some rumors are more credible than others, but we've yet to hear about any kind of official Bond prospect list from any of the major reputable sources/trades. So, yeah, it could still be anyone.
At least we'll finally know for sure here in the next three-or-so months.

I think Jack Lowden would be an excellent choice.
Season 1 episode 1 of Slow Horses, the opening scene at London Stansted Airport "The exercise" showed Jack Lowden is a good action, hero type guy. The Slow Horses role is just that, a role, but I think Lowden would be an excellent Bond somewhat in the mold of Daniel Craig, who along with Sean Connery I thought were the best Bond's.

I know i'm going to get crucified on here for being negative (again), but
1) Lowden is plain wrong for Bond. And yes, I've seen every episode of Slow Horses.
2) do we really need one more franchise where the hero is disaffected and bored of being a hero? That's all current uncreative writers can produce because they believe they just have to subvert everything, and its been so saturated into our collective entertainment mindset that now the audience thinks all our heros have to be that way. Just give me a damn straightup Bond who is proud to be a hero and does heroic **** because that's what heroes do. The guy suggesting this in his X post doesn't even realize that a "bored" Bond concept isn't new or unusual or daring....its actually the same basic "deconstructed hero" that Hollywood has been giving us for quite a while now. Ironically its that concept that's boring. What would be truly daring for 2026 Hollywood is what we've discussed on here.... a James Bond set in the '60s who's a suave f'n stud taking down bad guys, not giving a **** about the chain of command or political correctness, and being a p**** hound in his downtime.

I think Oldman's statement is being misinterpreted. I read it as he thinks/knows the decision has been made (just not announced) and he's hoping Lowden is the pick.
Taken as a whole, that certainly makes the most sense.
