Oh it's a great film. I have some great memories of watching this with my dad it was the first western he ever showed me.

Reminds me of Kal Penn talking about his audition for Van Wilder.

He says while the role offended him, he said it was more offensive if a white dude in brown face played the role, which is what they were going to do if he declined.

He didn't like it but appreciates the fact it made his career.

Or Parker Stevens in the Short Circuit films. Amazing that was ok in the 80s. Although he pulled off being an Indian pretty well...I never even realized he wasn't until a decade later.

the "CAAAANN!!!" is both a reference to James Caan, the actor in the scene clip from El Dorado, and Kirk's KHAAAANNN!! yell from Star Trek 2.

He first asks for a tab, which is sugar free and the precursor to diet coke (and coincidentally existed for nearly 40 years along side diet coke ). The waiter says 'I can't start a tab until you order something.'
Joke #1.

So Marty asks for a pepsi free, which is caffeine free pepsi. Not sugar free.

Waiter says you want a pepsi you have to pay for it. Joke #2.

Then Marty settles on 'something without any sugar in it', and waiter gives him coffee.


First, pepsi free is not sugar free, it's caffeine free. His final request of 'something without sugar' suggests he wouldn't want a pepsi free, but rather a diet pepsi free.

Second, what person would ask for a coke product by name, and then also a pepsi product.. you're usually either one or the other! Every 80s kid knows this

Binge watching the Sopranos which is 25 years old now.

Still amazingly awesome- in some respects much funnier than the original time I watched it in 1999.

Escape From New York, one of my favorite movies, set in 1997, had Snake Plissken land a glider atop the WTC. That doesn't date the movie considering it was set in 1997, but anyone discovering it for the first time now might think so.

I almost remember that scene in that movie. The movie didn't do much for me when I watched it maybe 35 years ago, but hearing that scene described makes me want to watch it now.

Are you saying its dated because it included the World Trade Center or because the special effects were dated? If its because of the WTC, then a LOT of movies get added to this list.

Yes, because they used the WTC. But I specified this as for folks who never saw it prior to 2001 and now know only a world without those buildings.

Well...Jack Burton may tell you that it is all in the reflexes, or that the he shook the pillars of heaven, but I still need to be able to enjoy the effects in a movie somewhat without laughing at the campiness to feel that the movie holds up.

After watching this one a few months ago, I am nervous about revisiting Snake Plisken's accomplishments.

Coincidentally enough National Lampoons Vacation was on this weekend on the background and wife and I looked up at the end where the Griswalds were running to WallyWorld in the parking lot. The back drop that was suppose to be Wally World was so over the top fake looking (we were trying to decide if it was just cheap production value or was it over the top on purpose. Either way looked extremely dated and was eye catching.

Sure, but hindsight being what it is, the story could have been told with China or India being the rival space-travelling nation, and it probably would have been as effective and believable.

If the rival had not been the Soviets, then I would have asked about the back story of why they were not.

If it had been the Chinese, I would have asked about their rise to interplanetary travel in less than nine years (2001-2010)
