I mean…The Odyssey has been up against Spider-Man, which has been #1 at the box office for 5 weeks now. And it's still trucking along where tons of other movies have failed, even decent ones.
And I understand the inflation argument, I wish they reported tickets sold, not just BO, but even with tickets sold, it's a hit.
Again, just because you don't like it or didn't work for you means that it can't also be a hit. I haven't talked to anyone IRL who has seen it and didn't like it. I've talked to lots of people who aren't seeing it because they think they won't or it's too long, but everyone I know who has gone thought it was really good. It seems to be working for a lot of people because it keeps making money.
Maybe go watch Troy and then come back with your takes about how mid the Odyssey is, cause that movie is really terrible.

In fairness, he didn't say he didn't like it or that his friend group didn't like it. He said it was mid or a B- movie. His point is more so that the opinions of some are overinflated due to a lack of quality epics released in the last 10-15 years.
I've actually heard of a lot of younger audiences, teens through mid 20's, really love the movie. I don't think it's out of the ballpark to speculate their love for the movie is due to their lack of experience in watching great epics by which to compare.
I also never thought the movie was bad. I am surprised so many think it's so great. I literally have no desire to ever see it again and I don't think it comes close to other film epics.
LotR, The Last Samurai, Master and Commander... these are truly great epics. I don't think The Odyssey sniffs their boots. But, that's my opinion. Everyone is welcome to theirs.

Also, I don't really see that many people raving about it in the thread. Most people are just saying they liked it if they did. The raving is just about how much money it continues to make.

Watched The Last Samurai with my gen alpha son a few months ago. Such a great story with real character development. I gave no info going in - warmed my heart to hear my son say it might be the best movie he's ever seen. Some teenage hyperbole there, sure… need to show him Last of the Mohicans.
I like The Last Samurai as a movie over Last of the Mohicans, personally.
Had a similar experience with my boys after watching Braveheart.

I remember liking Troy quite a bit when it came out. I did a re-watch after seeing the Odyssey a few weeks ago and if it was ever good, it has not held up at all.

Also, it was a surprise to see Rose Byrne in Troy - I didn't remember her being in it at all.
The Odyssey is a much better movie than Troy. Troy had some cool fight scenes, but otherwise not very good. Alexander is underrated. The final cut of the movie is very good.

I find this happens to me with most of Nolan's movies. I tend to like them more the 2nd time (and then increasingly over-time). I think its because you don't ever really know what you are in for, so its hard to kind of adjust your expectations real-time. Then, when you know what he has made, you can appreciate it for what it is on rewatch. Even if I love it the first time I watch it, I only love it more when I watch it more later.

Master and commander deserves more love, wish we had gotten more of the books turned into movies
We live in a world where the Avatar movies, trash Jurassic Park & Star Wars sequels, Aqua Man & Captain Marvel all have made more money than Jaws, Indiana Jones, Godfather, etc.
Can we just agree that a movies box office take doesn't necessarily correlate to a quality movie?

Then the movie itself looked boring/bad.
Then it was "woke" and we had to deal with all of those hysterics.
Then it was going to fail spectacularly.
Then it was "Nolan got rid of influencer screenings because the movie sucks and he knows it."
Then it was "Okay, critics like it, but once 'real' people see it, reactions will be terrible and poor word of mouth will ensure that it still bombs."
Then it was "Okay, sure, critics and 'real' people like it, but they're all lying because it's Christopher Nolan and peer pressure or something."
Then it was "Okay, yeah, it's making money, but no way it was does a billion."
And now, finally, it's "Okay, yeah, it did a billion and it's breaking records but only because of inflation and population increase."

Also? No one said box office = quality. This all started because zgolfz85 insisted, in his obsessive, never-ending crusade, that the movie is, objectively, an "underwhelming stinker" and that we're all eventually going to come to our senses. In response, my "grandstanding" about the box office was simply a tangible way to dispute his moronic claims that millions of people are all in the wrong.
Just saw it (wanted to catch it at the theater). Thought it was great. Love greek mythology and felt like a little kid again at the movies.
I have no idea about all the cultural expectations and narrative surrounding the film. I'm not on social media and I don't follow Hollywood rumors or commentary.
I saw the film to be entertained. I was entertained but not blown away. This film uses a big budget with an A-list cast, beautiful cinematography, and source material from one of the most famous stories in the history of the world to sell a lot of tickets. From a storytelling perspective it's pretty mediocre and uninteresting. I think most people agree to that.
It's a cool looking piece of entertainment that is really fun to see in a theater, but decades from now will not carry the same cultural weight as films like Braveheart, Gladiator, LotR, etc., which were far more interesting movies with better writing and superior character development. Isn't this kind of the consensus? Why is everyone arguing about this so much? Who cares about the box office?

BO #s do not suggest quality but popularity. LOTS of movies make a ton of money that people agree are not very good. For a movie to to continue to make as much money as The Odyssey is this far into its release is uncommon and therefore interesting to people who follow that stuff. Obsession had a similar BO story, and people talking about that and being interested in that in no way means they think it was the best horror movie of all time.
I think we are having the same issues now that we had before the movie. People take their opinions about something and create a narrative with them to mean something about the culture, or Hollywood, or anyone who disagrees with their opinion, etc.
Like or don't like the movie, thats fine. Using that opinion to then say people are delusional, or dumb, or hyping with an agenda, or whatever is what I find frustrating. People are definitely doing that on both sides on the internet, but I don't feel like people on this thread who liked the movie are trying to paint people who don't with a broad brush or negatively. Its a movie.
