I don't know who that rando x-person is, but even if the claims are true about RYD's accuracy, you can pretty much conclude that the dislikes are quite large based on the comments. Both Odyssey trailers have 37k or more comments each, and they're overwhelmingly negative.

It's cute that y'all seem to think those negative comments are mostly from a bunch of normies who genuinely believe the movie looks bad - and not from the ultra-anti-woke keyboard warrior types who do this rage downvoting/down-commenting nonsense to a couple "woke" movies every damn year.

Just think for a second...

There are terrible blockbusters all the time and none of them see anywhere near the amount of online, pre-release, targeted negativity this one is receiving. So you really believe, in this particular instance, that a bunch of Average Joes think a Christopher Nolan movie, of all movies, looks SO bad that they're all racing to YouTube to express their feelings in the comments?

When, in reality, it's just a bunch of obsessive culture war bull**** that pretty much lives on YouTube / reddit / social media and no where else.

To that end, you realize, less than a week out, the movie is still tracking to do $80-$100M+ opening weekend, right? And will almost assuredly end up being one of Nolan's top four or five opening weekends ever, if not top three on the high end? I know some of you think middle America is going to tank this thing via hate-fest or boycott or whatever, but that's just not going to happen.

Hell, anecdotally, I've been in Texas the past week, in my highly conservative hometown, and me being the "movie guy," friends and family keep bringing up The Odyssey as something they can't wait to see. Even my ultra-conservative, Fox-News-obsessed dad is stoked. In other words, all this culture war bull**** hasn't penetrated beyond the extremely online, and everyone I know here, at least, is just flat-out excited for a new Christopher Nolan blockbuster. Never-mind the objectively high pre-sale numbers, the unanimously positive reactions so far, etc.

Even Youtubers I watch who don't like the apparent direction Nolan has taken with this movie and rant against "Hollywood" in general will freely admit its highly, HIGHLY, unlikely this is going to tank. It won't be surprising if it comes up short of a billion because it doesn't have the whole "Barbenheimer" thing to push it, and it'll take a hit in week 2 because of SpiderMan opening up. But starting in week 3 there's not a whole lot of competition for a while, so if it has good word of mouth with the general audience it could have some good legs.

But, it'll be interesting to watch.

If we're addressing grievances, I have to vent about the most egregious oversight I've seen in some time with this movie…

The Trojan Horse popcorn bucket. LOOK at this monstrosity?!

Even if you're able to get over the psychological hurdle of eating the "innards" of a horse, the damn thing is borderline useless as a popcorn vessel! The promo photo shows popcorn strewn about and that's an accurate representation of how things are gonna go! Popcorn spills out everywhere from this thing! You need to flip the damn thing upside down to eat it without spilling half its contents! And it still leaks more than an MCU production set!

Also look at the size of this beast! Imagine sitting down with that in your lap?! Lol

This is the perfect manifestation of aesthetic over function.

Genuine question for those with grievances, what IF Travis Scott was in like two scenes, Helen of Troy has only a few short lines, Elliot Page has a few minutes of screen time but the movie otherwise is exceptional with great performances from Holland, Pattinson, Damon, and Hathaway carrying the film? Would you still go see it or are the choices of aesthetic, casting, and dialogue enough to keep you from trying it out?

Then it would be a good movie in lieu of some stupid choices.

Let me ask YOU a question: have you actually read this thread? This has been said multiple times by both myself and many others with critiques.

No need to be condescending. The question is will you go see it or are you going to wait and see? In other words do you already have tickets? It's a genuine question.

I have minor concerns over the above referenced grievances.

I have IMAX tickets for opening weekend.

If not going the BIPOC / following rules for awards route, then:

- use Greek actors
- Greek language with subtitles
- pay homage to text and early performance - meaning, song

In other words, be Mel Gibson

Speaking of which, watch Apocalypto instead

I guess the proof will be in the pudding. This movie needs to make something like $500-600 million at the box office to break even. If initial impressions from the audience are bad after that first weekend, it could be in trouble. Sure, there are terrible movies made all the time, but this is a high profile Nolan movie. It's definitely going to draw more attention when it looks bad.

Such disrespect from Nolan towards the source material. This is why there's so much backlash towards this particular movie.

Is that real? I don't even understand what it means. The ancient world was much smaller than the world today. Do people in the modern era fault the Greeks for not being inclusive? Their "world" was the Mediterranean and Black Sea and North Africa.

Hold on there, you said if they're not going to attempt the BIPOC route then they should go the 100% authentic route. That's what I agree with.
Redstone

I appreciate historically authenticity also. And I admire Gibson as a filmmaker.

What is the director intent? That's the real question. Here, Nolan is signalizing BIPOC Prioritization. So let's understand and appreciate it.

How many Greeks were black and trans?

I suppose it doesnt really matter if the movie is good, which it might be, but this is silly.

Nolan is one of the best directors of our time and certainly one of my top 5 after Spielberg and Aronofsky and I wont write him off until he actually makes a bad movie, so we will see what the art that he has created tells us. It's all speculation at this point, but screening critics ahead of it's release, which I do not believe he has ever done before, is certainly a strange choice.
i'm sorry i dont laugh at the right times.

The great thing is that Gibson seemed to accomplish both - BIPOC representation AND authenticity - with Apocalypto. Hence why its a goated movie.

If you told Mel to make a few of the Mayans or Spaniards black or Indian, you know, for the modern audience, or to please the critics and Academy folks, he would laugh in your face. We were lucky to have him directing movies for a while. In Hollywood you have to accept being persona non grata or stay within certain parameters. I hope that environment is shifting and things will become more liberal, I believe it is.
