100%. I'm one of the crazy people who enjoy star studded casts, big blowout budgets, R ratings, and long run times. But different strokes....

So, my issue with big star-studded casts is that IMO there aren't many actors who can disappear sufficiently enough into a role that you stop seeing them and only see the character. Day-Lewis, Oldman, Dicaprio, Cillian Murphy (younger actors that show a lot of promise are Chalamet and Austin Butler) are just a few that come to mind. Even great actors like Cruise and Denzel are still Cruise and Denzel no matter what roles they're playing.

In the cast of The Odyssey the only big name I envision who'll disappear into his role enough to become the role is Robert Pattinson. That dude has just impressed me so much with how he can become his characters. Maybe Charlize Theron? Hey, maybe Leguizamo believe it or not. The dude has more range than often given credit for.

For the rest of the cast, well.... Matt Damon is always Matt Damon no matter his role (and I love him, but still). Zendaya will be frowny one-note Zendaya, like she is in every role. Jon Bernthal, love him, but he has one mode and he plays that one mode to the extreme in every role.

I guess it's just that in movies with so many recognizable faces I'm always distracted thinking, "oh, that guy is from such-and-such movie!".

Edited to add that it's not just this movie I'm bagging on for the all-star casting. I'm starting to get concerned about Heat 2 going for the big names rather than who might fit the roles the best.

But that was WELL-cast. This one just seems like check-box casting. A lot of big names, but few of them feel right. With Nolan being able to get damn near anyone he wants on board, this group just feels like a weird assortment.

I haven't watched the previews on purpose because I generally avoid all previews these days but did catch the one currently on tv and I agree with others that Matt Damon talking normally was jarring as hell.

I'm sure I'll get over it because it's not like that isn't somewhat normal in historical fiction movies, but man it really jumped out.

Not a big movie theater goer..

Where in Bryan-College Station would be the best place to go to a movie to watch?

Thanks

The latest trailer in the true, official IMAX ratio (1.43:1).

Not officially released, though - IMAX literally owns the format and almost never puts it online/on Blu-ray - so I have no idea how long this will be up.

Looks incredible in this aspect ratio, though...

Also, it's sounding more and more like the final trailer is coming this week, likely in conjunction with general, non-IMAX tickets going on sale.

I did a pretty thorough search of the TexAgs' Odyssey thread from 1997, but couldn't find anyone criticizing the casting of Vanessa Williams as Circe.

I am glad he built an actual seaworthy boat and filmed those scenes on the water because those scenes in particular look great.

I saw her once at a basketball tournament in Dallas when she was married to Rick Fox and they had a daughter who played. She past 50 by then and was responsible for several hundred men walking into things, wrenching their necks and getting the People's Elbow from their wives just by standing there.

My response would have been, "Baby she's on the wasol (wife-approved stepping out list)".

Completely agree with you on the "disappear into the role" thing and Pattinson being one of the best in his age range, right now.

I will give Cruise credit for The Last Samurai. That's the one Cruise movie where I think he did disappear into the role and I would forget I'm watching Tom Cruise in certain scenes. Though, I am an admitted Last Samurai fanboy. I think that is a perfect movie.

I mean... I wouldn't like the casting because of Vanessa Williams' race. But I could 100% buy into her being beautiful enough to start a war. She was breathtaking, in her prime.

Part of that was that out of his dozens and roles, he is almost always clean-shaven. The long hair and beard kind of helped make his character more distinctive.

Zwick: Now, Tom, about your hair.

Tom: What about my hair?

Zwick: I want to go with a different hairstyle.

Tom: ......What?

Zwick: Something more...frontier-ish.

Tom: You… You… You want me to look like a frontiersman?

Zwick: Think less frontiersman, more Civil War officer. Bang! Bang!

Tom: Right. Say, Ed. Ed… if you got me covered up in all this… this junk, how's the audience gonna know it's me?

Zwick: I hope they don't! I don't want them to see Ethan Hunt. I want them to see Algren! I hired you to be an actor, Tom, not a special agent. You're better than that.

Do you and the 12 people that starred this really think he was being serious when he said he looked through a movie thread (that totally exists) for a movie that came out a year before this website was created?

Considering all the other crap thrown around on this thread defending some ridiculous talking points, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

And do you, and the one person who starred your post believe that people actually do what they claim they do so they can prove some sort of point? This board has become as ridiculous as the politics board at times, especially once TC gets started on one of his lectures, so yes, yes I do believe something like that would happen. Or claim to.

Once you realize that 99% of my posts are sarcastic, we'll have a much better working relationship. I watched the Armand Assante mini-series on TV back in the 1990s. I thought it would make a good "ha-ha" for the board since black Vanessa Williams is in it.

If the Greeks had really built it that way for the sneak attack, there would have been even more gay sex than normal in Ancient Greece with people laying on top of each other all night

Also, for what it's worth, straight from Nolan himself...

Quote:

"We wanted the world to feel like a recognizable world to people, even though it was going to be Ancient Greece. We don't want it to look and feel like previous movies that take on this kind of classical world. What can we do that's more timeless than that?"

You can pine for historical accuracy all you want and, to an extent, I totally get it. That's absolutely your prerogative. But here's Nolan telling you exactly why he wasn't after that / why he's made the decisions he's made.
Cliff.Booth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
People don't need to see someone who looks like them for a world to be recognizable. Misses the point of stories being about universal themes, but whatever. His movie, his call.
