Finally saw it! I'm sure a lot of this is reiterating points already made in the thread but here goes…

- Really fun to watch in theaters. I doubt I'll ever watch this again because so much of the appeal is the visuals and grand scale.

- I'm sure the dialogue has been thoroughly discussed, but I thought it was horrible. It felt like one American colloquialism after another, and created a real cognitive dissonance against the setting of a Greek classic set in antiquity. The reception of this film has been strong enough that clearly the dialogue didn't ruin it for most people, but I thought it really detracted overall.

- Acting was mixed. As much has been made of the multicultural casting, I thought the weakest performance overall was from Tom Holland. He felt like a normal American kid dressed up in a Greek costume saying his lines as if he were hanging out with buddies. Also the Telemachus character was kind of puny and impotent, and never really develops all that much.

- The buildup and execution of the final scene with the suitors was awesome. That scene was the culmination of over 2.5 hours of buildup, and it didn't disappoint.

Overall it was a fun watch in the theater, if not at least a half hour too long.

Thats the character tho, not the acting. The movie doesn't underline it, but the character really starts to change after Menelaus tells him to man up, and then even more when Odysseus comes back and starts to work with him to overthrow the suitors. He gets smarter as the film moves along. Its obviously not the main arc of the movie and perhaps it could have been developed more, but it stood out to me more the 2nd time I saw it. Holland was just fine to me on first watch, but I appreciated the performance more the 2nd time I watched it. He probably has one of the hardest roles to play. It could easily slip into annoying, but I think he mostly avoids that.

Well you can tell me if wrong, but in Homer I remembered him returning from Sparta as a far more formidable character. My indictment of his portrayal in the film relates more to the latter portion of the narrative. I expected him to factor more strongly in overthrowing the suitors.

and for me, I wish I'd have waited for streaming, rather than spend $50 to go see it. I like when movies do well, as long as they're justifiably doing well. This isn't that. I gave it a 7/10 (generously) upon leaving the theater, but having sat on it for a couple of weeks and being asked what I thought of it by friends and family, I honestly couldn't really detail anything I enjoyed about it...aside from the cheap thrills like some of the visuals and sound, etc. To me, it was like we paired big budget box office quality sound and visuals with made for tv level writing, acting and casting. Revised score for me....5.5/10, honestly.

I think you missed the point that Rigs was being openly sarcastic.

It was difficult to tell that you were being hyperbolic because your expanded post about revising your rating down from 7.0 to 5.5 seems like an honest opinion and the work of someone who takes their movie going pretty serious.
