I almost feel the need to defend the character here. Granted, he may be a degenerate and an absentee father. But in this scene, what we are seeing is the result of the mother's parenting. He is discovering how much he has let down his daughter by not being there.
I think White Lotus would be a nice place to jump in for some truly adult degenerate behavior. Then if one can stomach that, graduate to Euphoria.

Hollywood is full of degenerates who get off on this kind of stuff. Writers, directors, producers, etc. They project these situations as if this is common dialogue b/t parents and kids. The scene does nothing to enhance the plot, develop characters, or add any redeeming quality to the show.

I went to a conservative private school, and my parents didn't tell me one single thing about sex except, "don't do it." I got to A&M and I knew literally nothing about sex AND even thinking about it scared me. I wasn't remotely equipped to protect myself or to set boundaries with men because I didn't even know what the lines were, let alone how to discuss them directly with someone. So yeah, I'm not willing to tell my daughter "no sex" and leave it at that. I want to set her up to be able to talk about sex openly. Not explicitly, in the style of Taylor Sheridan, but directly, and honestly. If I don't teach her how to do this, she could end up learning on the fly from some 20 year-old man child who does not have her best interest at heart.
Some of y'all act like sex is a four letter word. While i don't want to teach them everything about it; I'm not going to pretend like it doesn't exist. I'd rather be frank and honest about sex and their periods. I don't get squeamish in asking them if they're prepared for their periods as they head off to school. I do their laundry and have had to buy emergency underwear so I know that it happens. The thing that breaks my heart is when I hear that some schools don't make pads available to girls. But I digress.
I caught my daughter googling sex stuff that she heard from boys. Yes they talk about sex whether it's a conservative school or not. I talked to her about it and shared enough to curb her curiosity. I told her that she can come to me and ask me any question that she wants and that I will give age appropriate answers. Ultimately, I don't want her trying to figure things out from the internet or other kids.
The only thing that is cringy is her last response, otherwise, I have no issue with a father asking if her daughter is having safe sex. Better to be safe than sorry.

I'm guessing that most people outraged by the clip didn't watch the show. The dialogue is to show you how far removed BBT's character is from the day-to-day raising of his daughter, and the fact that she's being left to her own devices by a Mom that is too focused on where she's going on vacation with her new boyfriend. He chose the oilfield life vs. being an involved parent.

I will only say that some of the girls that went the craziest sexually my freshman year (sleeping with double digits of guys for instance) were the ones from very religious or otherwise sexually sheltered household's. Some of them I am still friends with all these years later, they evened out eventually. But they had a rough few years, and it could have been very dangerous for them. For all I know it was and I just never found out.

Nah, I think I've got a good handle on things. Given the data, the standard way of going about the sex topic sets them up for failure. I'll go ahead and reject that and have a more adult way of going about it. The major problem is that sex conversations with teens half way treats them like kids and leaves out any real intellectual conversation and then sets up the expectation that they will obviously have sex. Then we wonder why 30% or more of the babies I've delivered have been to kids in school. I've had parent after parent look at me with their pregnant sophomore and say "I tried to tell her to protect herself"

Taylor Sheridan wrote this scene.
Sheridan was born in Texas and lives/works there to this day.
He owns both the Four Sixes Ranch and the Bosque Ranch.
Also, he played high school football.
And is about as un-Hollywood as Hollywood gets.

Abstinence education results in higher teenage pregnancy rates.
All of that data is based on school programs. That's not the same thing as what they hear at home

I'm not in your house to know what is said, but your argument was specifically that teaching safe sex leads to more pregnancies in teens. The data doesn't support that argument. Quite the opposite. Restricting that information from teens leads to higher rates of pregnancy.
My argument was specific to parenting given the clip in the op. As I said before the classic "don't, but if you do" is confusing and inconsistent. It frames sex and the associated teleology in a totally nonsensical manner. You should of course talk about the broader social topic of "safe sex" but it should be done in a manner that points out illogical nature of the term
