I love this scene when Gandalf rebukes Frodo about Bilbo and Gollum.

Frodo: 'It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance.'

Gandalf: 'Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.'

Frodo: 'I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.'

Gandalf: 'So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides that of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, in which case you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought."

I've never seen any of the LOTR movies. I need to remedy that ASAP.

Watch the extended editions. Not the cinema release versions. The extra footage is worth it and fleshes out some stories and characters a bit more.

During Winter Storm Uri we never lost power. One day my wife and I watched the entire LOTR trilogy in between walking in the snow and taking dogs out and cooking meals and such.

They still stand up, including the special effects and CGI.

As much as I love the EEs, for whatever reason I think FOTR works better in the theatrical version. Maybe cause I've seen that version a lot more, but it seems to flow way better.

For TTT and ROTK, I definitely recommend the EEs. The added scenes are pretty crucial and the theatrical versions feel incomplete without them.

The stuff with Saruman in the EE's is really good.

War Rocket Ajax coming through the clouds. It had the feeling of Jaws, which released five years earlier, with a sound that is tied to the image (also similar to Jaws), the driving beat - Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum Dum . . . FLASH!!!

This scene with Ajax coming out of the clouds with the entire Hawkmen force hovering and waiting on it.

Queen kicks in.

Prince Vulcan: Ah, well...who wants to live forever? DIVVVEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

Most awesome f'ing scene ever in a movie.

I have a love-hate relationship with Midway. I still remember the long line at Houston's Tower Theater to get in, and all the Navy recruiting postcards in the lobby. I was 9 when this came out. I recall a stop in New Orleans on our long drive to Disney World, where I saw the word Midway on a marquee, but Dad shot me down on going to see it. Then a couple of years later, I was with my mom in a grocery store, bored, flipping through the new TV Guide when I came across a full page ad for Midway's debut on network TV. I literally yelled, mom probably thought something bad was happening, and then probably wanted to beat me for that public commotion.

Loved the airplanes, and from what I knew at the time, the story was basically accurate.

As I got older, I came to laugh at the movie's use of archival footage featuring aircraft that did not even exist in 1942. The kicker was the Dauntless crashing on the carrier deck and out rolled the nose cone of an F9F Cougar. And I really hated the Japanese girlfriend subplot.

While I still enjoy watching this (and listening to John Williams's great score), I prefer the 2019 remake despite its inaccuracies (far less of those).
