Couldn't agree more. Saw them in the Woodlands. Sammy's love for his fans is what stands out. Damn! What vocals and showmanship!
I used to not like Sammy for some reason. Was always a "VH is only with DLR" and thought Sammy's solo stuff was goody butt rock. But the more I've seen him on social media I've come to appreciate he seems to be a good down to earth dude and someone I'd love to have a beer with (on the beach?). Would definitely would go to a show.
Back in the 80s, pretty much all you had was Hit Parader and Circus magazine to learn about your favorite rock stars, so you didn't really get a good insight into who they truly were. But just on their public personas, Diamond Dave was, hands down, the best frontman in rock n roll at the time (among his contemporaries, not including Jagger, etc.). Like you, I was Team Dave. There was no shame in backing Roth in 1986.
But neither father time nor access to info have been good for Dave. He's a very strange cat these days. Sammy, OTOH, has aged magnificently and comes off as one of the coolest guys around.
