And the Bad version from Wide Awake in America might be the most understated rock song of all time. U2 fans love it, but it never really went beyond that, which is sad. Amazing track.

One night about 12-13 years ago, a couple of my friends were counselors at a Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp in LA.

They had taught the guitarists how to play "I Will Follow". I got a little tired of hearing the intro riff as they warmed up. Enjoy.

The main way I heard U2 growing up was by going to Astros games and they were Biggio's walkup songs.

Right?! I clicked through about another 15 or so songs and yup, nada. Not a single one I recognized as ever hearing before. Still can't say for sure I have never heard one before. I can confirm that I have never KNOWINGLY heard them and the 25-30ish songs I've sampled have all been new to me so far. I have absolutely polluted my Youtube feed now...

I just didn't grow up in the culture. Been a metalhead since birth basically. And to be absolutely blunt here, I am not caucasian. I was also born and raised in the barrio and didn't escape that until high school. And trust me, U2 is not played in the ghetto, ever. And by high school, the world was deep into the 90's and early 2000s rock scene so U2 wasn't even really a thing in high school either. That actually may have been the first time I even heard the name. Definitely in passing though. I can't think of a single friend that listened to them either.

Trust me, I think it's weird too. It's not my music scene, at all, but I can recognize that they are an international icon. But yeah, new to me I guess.

Funny. I went to the U2 Joshua Tree 30th anniversary tour concert at NRG Stadium in Houston. Walking back to our hotel, we ran into a couple of black guys who were coming out of the apartments near NRG. They asked what show everyone was coming from, we told them U2. One goes, who's that? The other replied, "you know, and then starts rattling off U2 hits". So, apparently, U2 is played in the hood at times for a 20 something black guy from the hood to name some songs.

That's awesome! I mislabeled ghetto the second time so everyone had an idea what I was talking about. Barrio is not a commonly known term among educated caucasians, which is most of TA. Still think it's much more likely U2 is known in a black ghetto over a hispanic one though. Where English is not even widely known. Come to think of it, old school country is something I do remember hearing a few times growing up. You'd have some norteno playing followed by George Straight out of nowhere and then back to the accordions. Fun times

I'm sure I mentioned it before, but I saw U2 on the Joshua Tree tour Dec 5 1987 at Tampa stadium. It was a dress rehearsal for the Tempe show used in Rattle and Hum so all the cameras were there.
The show was great obviously, but as a high school senior, all I could focus on were how many gorgeous college aged women there were there, it was insane (U2 was the most popular band in the world probably at that point so everyone wanted to be at that show) . I had already been accepted to UF, but after that my desire to get to Gainesville quickly went up like 3 levels.

I have never played a Beatles song in my life (jukebox, CD, spotify, etc) and I have never listened to an entire Beatles song.

I don't think I have ever heard the Grateful Dead. I'm not sure.

Great episode. I only recently found out that Johnny Drama is in the movie "Platoon". I guess I'm overdue for my once a decade watching of Platoon.

Also, damn I miss that mid-2000s Los Angeles scene.

It is amazing how dead it is now compared to the Entourage era. It was fun while it lasted but by now, most of my friends have moved or died and it's just overrun with homeless. Luckily I've got the whole Entourage box set.

Speaking of 1987, when I lived in Australia, they put out a TV movie mini-series thing about INXS.
I could not get my Aussie co-workers to understand how huge INXS was in America during 1987-1988.

It was a rare situation where in a movie type thing, they didn't exaggerate the bands popularity enough.
