I know I've heard Enter Sandman by Metallica (mainly due to Virginia Tech), but couldn't name anything else.

You also left out the intro for "The Tom Leykis Show"

This phenomenon will only grow as music grows more and more siloed. It's easy today to listen to one genre or even a subset of a genre and never be exposed to anything else.

Wasn't the case back in the 60s and 70s, when both Top 40 and FM stations generally played a broader range of tunes. So you could hear the Temptations, Elton John, Loggins and Messina, Zeppelin and Chuck Mangione all in an hour.

How the **** does someone that was born in the 80s not know any U2 songs? That doesn't even seem possible.
Right?! I clicked through about another 15 or so songs and yup, nada. Not a single one I recognized as ever hearing before. Still can't say for sure I have never heard one before. I can confirm that I have never KNOWINGLY heard them and the 25-30ish songs I've sampled have all been new to me so far. I have absolutely polluted my Youtube feed now...

I just didn't grow up in the culture. Been a metalhead since birth basically. And to be absolutely blunt here, I am not caucasian. I was also born and raised in the barrio and didn't escape that until high school. And trust me, U2 is not played in the ghetto, ever. And by high school, the world was deep into the 90's and early 2000s rock scene so U2 wasn't even really a thing in high school either. That actually may have been the first time I even heard the name. Definitely in passing though. I can't think of a single friend that listened to them either.

Trust me, I think it's weird too. It's not my music scene, at all, but I can recognize that they are an international icon. But yeah, new to me I guess.
This is funny, because I was genuinely trying to think of the types of people I might have known throughout my life that could have possibly gone almost 40 years without knowing any U2 songs, and the first thought that popped into my mind were the ese's that I went to elementary and junior high school with. Their parents weren't listening to that type of music and they sure as hell weren't. I am sure most of them eventually heard some U2 during all this time, but possible that a few haven't.

To a lesser degree, I'd bet there ate quite a few black people who haven't had much exposure either. I really mostly only know their songs because I have always been into classic rock and they used to play some of their older/better stuff on 93.7 The Arrow.

I have never played a Beatles song in my life (jukebox, CD, spotify, etc) and I have never listened to an entire Beatles song.
Same, I have never been able to stand The Beatles. Any of their songs. Several of the ones that make most people happy ("Here comes the Sun" etc) either annoy me or make me depressed.

Somehow my wife, who I have known since 2008, never knew this about me. My wife and sister's jaws both dropped the other day as I revealed this to both of them...that I can't stand a single song of theirs. Not one.

Back in the '90s, my company had an internship program with an inner-city school that provided jobs to students (and scholarships).

The students would go to school half a day and work in the office half a day. There were probably 100 or more students involved, almost all Hispanic.

One day, we noticed our intern in the hallway crying with a bunch of other interns. She was inconsolable. We asked her what was wrong and she said, "Selena is dead."

One of my coworkers asked "Did she go to your school?" and all the students just glared.

None of the white folks working there knew who Selena was.

Thats gonna be me and Kendrick Lamar for this years super bowl halftime show. Based on how popular he is it sounds like a great pick for the show. I've just managed to never hear any of his songs but I'm old enough where I'm no longer the target audience for popular music.

Kendrick Lamar you say?

I'm sure i missed half of that joke, but I know that he has a beef with Drake so it was still funny to me.

Now there's a memory. In my 75-80% Mexican-American National Guard unit in the 1990s, we listened to a lot of Tejano music.

Each year, Michael and Colin do a joke swap. They write jokes for each other and have to read them live without having seen them before.

Colin wrote that for Michael. I take it Michael is a big Kendrick Lamar fan.

They have their own channel on SXM, a cult following, an influence on a wide array of today's artists and whom Rolling Stone called "one of the most important bands of the 90's".

I dont know a single song....and I have a wide variety of music on my playlist.

Class of '96 so this would have been in my "prime"....

"Cal (9-3) vs. Texas A&M (9-3). On the list of rare sights in Southern California, a team running the option -- as the Aggies like to do with QB Stephen McGee -- ranks right up there with real breasts and 12 inches of snow." Stewart Mandel CNNSI

Happy songs don't make me depressed at all. Quite the opposite. That is what I find so bizarre about The Beatles. I can't explain it, but there is something about the sound of many of their songs (music and vocals) that I find off-putting. "Strawberry Fields", "Let it Be", I could go on.

I am a huge classic rock guy and just have never been able to stand them.

"So this is Christmas" is another one, although that may just be John Lennon. Even when I was a kid, I found the sound of that song to be sad, and not happy in tone.

My classic rock playlist probably features every band you can think of from that era, except for The Beatles.

the only radio-friendly song of theirs is "Bouncing Around the Room" from 1990…seriously doubt it got any airplay in Texas…or any state south of Virginia for that matter….

Sort of doesn't meet the topic, but I love Metallica's first 2 albums, bought both in 1985 and still listen to them from time to time. Enter Sandman (like) and Master of Puppets (don't like) are the only other 2 Metallica songs I can name.

For me it's all of the bro country acts. I'm blown away that the likes of Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Zach Bryan, etc fill up places like NRG and Cowboys Stadium and I know nothing by them.

The only Luke Combs song I've heard is a cover of Tracy Chapman and the only Morgan Wallen song I know is the one with Post Malone. Zero clue on Zach Bryan.

I'm going with Taylor Swift. I know she writes songs about ex-boyfriends and is the biggest superstar on the planet but know nothing about her music.

I'm also a 50 yr old white dude so my position should be the normal one.

Quoting myself from page 1 real quick. I've you've seen any movie trailers in the last 10 years, you've probably heard Bad Blood, "I knew you were trouble when you walked in," Shake It Off, etc.

Phish, Grateful Dead and Selina are good ones. Most country artists I don't know (especially newer ones) but I never did country, so that's on me.

If not for Fred Meyer over-the-air soundtrack while shopping (grocery store) or being included in movies/tv shows, I would have no idea of any Taylor Swift song.

But alas I am aware of about 5 of them.

Who is Fred Meyer?

I had heard Suedehead but I never really listened to any Morrissey until the scamdemic when he started coming under fire for his politics which are pretty basic Re: Immigration, etc. But once the British media branded him as a right wing radical, I checked into him and now I'm a huge Morrissey fan.

I saw Morrissey in concert at Caesar's in Vegas in 2021 when you could only remove your mask if you were eating or drinking.

What's really surprised me is how many Mexicans are Morrissey fans. I had no idea.

Seriously though, my oldest daughter was the biggest Nikki Minaj fan so I got plenty of exposure.

Phish makes sense. They never had a top 40 hit. Rolling Stone calling them one of the most important bands of the 90s is just Rolling Stone saying Rolling Stone things.
