As in their songs. The Drumeo "never heard" series got me thinking.

U2

I know OF the band of course but have never overtly listened to a single song by them before. I honestly had no real idea what they truly sounded like even. But hey, super popular so figured I'd have heard of at least one in passing. So I googled and listened to their top ten most listened to songs annnnnd…..I had not heard a single one of them before. Still not sure I have heard anything from them at all but after those ten earlier, I think I'm done exploring their music. Forever.

Just thought that very weird. I'm 38 and thought myself pretty musically "aware". Guess not. As I'm typing this I also just realized I can't think of a Bruce Springsteen song either I have heard that I am 100% certain was one of his. Type to go down another rabbit hole…

Yall have anything like this?

I thought I hadn't heard any Taylor Swift songs. Gave her a listen and I knew 18 songs.

My answer is probably David Bowie. I know a few but not enough to make sense of his fame, so to speak. So I need to dive in.

Lot of the newer pop country dudes who perform under their first and last name. No idea what their huge songs are.

Kinda feel like I don't know much about Grateful Dead or Rush.

It's shocking to me that you're 38 and haven't heard U2. Late 90s, early 2000s, when you would have been in middle school/high school, they were arguably the biggest band in the world. I could get it if you were 20, and they were just before your time, but at 38, even if you missed them on the radio, there's no way you didn't hear them on an Apple commercial.

They played a really memorable halftime performance at the Super Bowl that happened after 9/11. It was very moving even to people that didn't like or really know U2.

How the **** does someone that was born in the 80s not know any U2 songs? That doesn't even seem possible.

Scrolling through the best selling artists of all time, the ones I don't think I could name a single song are:

Drake
Ed Sheeran
Chris Brown
Nicki Minaj
The Carpenters
James Taylor
Linda Ronstadt
Luke Bryan

Those are all the artists on Wikipedia's best selling artists of all time list not counting foreign artists like K-Pop crap.

It's not possible. There is some selective memory going on here, or OP just doesn't have a discerning ear at all.

Time to go back to listening to top 40 radio and leave the adults alone, OP.

Right?! I clicked through about another 15 or so songs and yup, nada. Not a single one I recognized as ever hearing before. Still can't say for sure I have never heard one before. I can confirm that I have never KNOWINGLY heard them and the 25-30ish songs I've sampled have all been new to me so far. I have absolutely polluted my Youtube feed now...

I just didn't grow up in the culture. Been a metalhead since birth basically. And to be absolutely blunt here, I am not caucasian. I was also born and raised in the barrio and didn't escape that until high school. And trust me, U2 is not played in the ghetto, ever. And by high school, the world was deep into the 90's and early 2000s rock scene so U2 wasn't even really a thing in high school either. That actually may have been the first time I even heard the name. Definitely in passing though. I can't think of a single friend that listened to them either.

Trust me, I think it's weird too. It's not my music scene, at all, but I can recognize that they are an international icon. But yeah, new to me I guess.

You never saw this commercial on TV?

Apple did their best to try and shove U2 down your throat. In fact, if you owned an iPod, they just added one of U2's albums to your iTunes. I don't remember which one. It was one of their later ones, and not a good one.

Nope. Not ringing a bell. The song nor the commercial. I also have not watched much tv in my life. Ironic because that is actually what made me even think of U2 at all today. Surprise! It's the 10 anniversary of the U2 album drop to your iphone! I do remember that particular stunt not being popular, at all.

this thread is as bad as the videos of the drummers who have never heard a song before and magically know it
or the vocal coaches reviewing singers and being wowed like they have never heard these people before

Does Grateful Dead qualify as "super popular?" I know they have a massive cult following, but were they ever a radio band? They have a satellite channel, now, I think...but I don't know any songs.

The only two Grateful Dead songs I know are Scarlet Begonias and Uncle John's Band, and that's only because Jimmy Buffett covered them.

I don't understand how the OP says 90's and 00's rock was big at his high school, yet didn't know U2, who was still pretty big during that time frame.

If nothing else, GD definitely qualifies as the band whose logo/merch I've seen more in my life but never heard (that I know of) and never felt compelled to pull up on Spotify. I could do one of those first time reaction videos for YT.

I do know a lot of Madonna songs, and I enjoy listening to some of her songs. However, even though I've acquired tens of thousands of songs since1982 (CDs, tapes, mix tapes, songs recorded off the radio, records, and downloads from various sources), I don't possess a single Madonna song in any format. Not even one of her songs on an 80s Spotify playlist.

I'm pretty sure I don't own any Madonna, either, but I probably know the lyrics to most of her songs from the 80s and 90s.

OP isn't crazy. I went though a brief Sunday Bloody Sunday / It's a Beautiful Day phase but otherwise I only knew a couple people in high school that loved U2. Their new stuff was all Elevation and cheesy **** by then (or at least that was the perception).
