Still my favorite video of a Metallica performance.

The Russian soldier beating a bottle with a baton for some reason around the 3:15 mark always cracks me up.

Alright Metallica lovers. Here are my guitars. Please recommend which guitar be played to get the best sound per album. I'm rediscovering Metallica riffs and having fun.

1. Schecter Diamond Series C-1 Platinum with Active 81/85 EMG pickups

2. Gibson Les Paul Classic

3. Gibson 70s Flying V

Here's what I was thinking:

Kill Em All: Flying V

Ride The Lightning: Flying V/ Les Paul

Master of Puppets: Flying V/Les Paul

And Justice for all: Les Paul/ Schecter

Black Album: Schecter

Bump.

I guess I'll go to MET forums for this question

I can't see any changes I'd make. I use my gibsons 70s v for the earlier albums, but I have a Snakebyte for the latter ones. Also have an LTD EC401 set up in d standard for sad but true and others, pretty sure it has the same pickups as the schecter

I've seen'em twice....the first show my brother caught a pick....and in my second show I did

Also saw a weird ass college aged boy with a furry tail and cat ears on standing near a hardass Mexican dude who was built like a mason surrounded by 3 of his posse/protection. By the third song they had their arms on each other's shoulders belting out the words together. I did NOT see that coming.

Ratt in Boston?? Playing with them? Or that was the venue?

Texarkana Community College!!!

Then just a week in Texas with no venues listed.

I didn't have money to get a Ride The Lightning Shirt in '85 when I saw them. Maybe I should get one now. Where did you order that one?

I like to think of them randomly driving around Texas during that week looking for venues.

I can't find any pictures of Daddy's in San Antonio but looks like lots of up and coming bands in the mid 80s performed there

I noticed a lot of users put Metallica's black album on their rankings on the 10/10 Album thread.

I've heard of the black album of being the bubblegum album and I know the sound quality and mixing is better, but I can't for the life of me understand how someone puts the black album in front of kill Em All or master of puppets….or even And Justice For All.

I'd bet for a lot of people it was their first exposure to them and has some extra value from that.

I absolutely love, love, love the Black album, but it's #5 on the list for me.

AMEN! I rarely listen to anything from the Black album except Don't Tread On Me. Too overplayed.

Maybe for some people the first 4 albums might have 1 song they skip, while the Black album overall may not rank as high as the others, but each song is unskippable? (Minus many being overplayed)

I don't buy the overplayed business..

If you have satellite radio, they play songs off the first 5 all day on like 4 channels. It's different enough from albums 1-4 that's it's hard to say it's better or worse. It does not have a skipper, same with first 4.

But it's different. It also sounds amazing as far as mastering/mixing.

There isn't much in their catalog like my friend of misery. That middle breakdown and solo is otherworldly.

Letting track 5 do it's intro and ensuing build up, it's perfection. And it has a 12 string bass and sitar to boot.

Being inventive with a heavy verse and soft chorus on unforgiven, the opposite of what was generally happening at that time.

What is the most technical song they've made lately? As they get up there in age, can they still hammer out songs like Disposable Heroes?
spit out the bone.

yes, in their early 60s, they are still pretty spot on.

They haven't played disposable since 2019.

yep I went to the Arlington shows!

I'm going to the acoustic benefit show in LA in December, can't wait.

weird for me.. I've seen them 14 times in 30 years, but half of those have been the last 5. They didn't do much stateside from 2009 to 2017.

I saw Metallica twice in 2000. First time at Texas stadium where James couldn't play, and then they had the makeup show at starplex. I was 21 and standing in the back and talking to a guy about 40 years old and grew up in San Francisco. He was all pumped up, and told us he hadn't seen Metallica live since Dave Mustaine was in the band.

Ha - same here on both of those shows. 15 years old at the time; no idea how I convinced my parents that those shows would be ok
