This video explains my exact problem with so many shows and movies these days. Particularly noticeable in Rings of Power and damn near every Star Wars Disney+ show.

I don't know, ultimately it comes down to artistic vision and ability of the Director and cinematographer. All of Nolan's movies are 'clean', but they are fantastic. Denis Villeneuve's movies are clean, but they are visually stunning and we are presented with so many scenes that are works of art.

ETA: I also love the artistic direction of movies like The Batman or Se7en and Fight Club, which are definitely not clean.

None of DV's movies look digital though. That's really what the problem is and what the video explains.

And it's got way more to do with filmmakers and DP's than the lenses and filming digitally.

That horse riding Galadriel on the beach scene was so, so over the top. I honestly couldn't believe they put that out there. Completely took me out of the show.

Would be easier to enjoy life if movies were better.

Thank you.

And don't worry TexAgs, my advice here is different than to my patients at the hospital.

But less about me and more about these great movies.

Compounding that "fake" feeling with movies & shows these days is that picture setting they have on most new TVs. Can't remember what it's called, but it basically makes everything brighter and "crisper".

I LOATHE that setting. My in-laws have that on their tv all the time and it takes every bit of strength for me to not change it for them. But I'm also the type that despises overhead lights, and they prefer to watch TV with every ceiling light on.

I bet you could sit thru 10 hours of LOTR movies and 40 hours of the Marvel Infinity Saga though.

That's definitely what it makes every show/movie feel like....like I'm watching a soap opera.

Clever username that's meaningful to you. Nicely done. And it appears to be your original one. Some on here can't say that, because their middle name is...Triggered.

I finally had a chance to watch this, and it's so spot on.

For some reason we've reached the point where so many filmmakers think that a pristine digital image is the ultimate goal, and that audiences want to feel physically immersed in the world, like we're actually there and could reach out and touch it.

When the story is thing that should immerse us, and the image itself needs a "barrier" of sorts between us and the world we're observing, in the form of great lighting, slight grain, lens flares, and at times out of focus edges, smudges, etc.

In the same way I want to admire a painting, brush strokes and all, observe the framing of it, etc. What I don't want to do is be in the painting, with flat, bright lighting, standing next to the subject as if it were real life, and all of the artistry scrubbed away.

Film and television shouldn't be 2D virtual reality. They should be art.

Recognizing a problem, wanting it to be better, and explaining to people exactly how it can be isn't being "cynical." It's basic human nature, and the video itself is providing an admirable service in pursuit of better art.

"Shut up and enjoy your slop" is such a weird, defeatist attitude.

Also, in no way is Spilner being an *******. Like, not even remotely. Why would you think that, given the context?

I swear, between this and your all-time-crazy Taylor Swift defense, you have some of the oddest reactions I've ever seen to people slightly/constructively criticizing things.

I think the problem with movies/shows today is 99% story and 1% look. The stories are simply too boring and simplified.

That probably would have been more weird than the route they took.

Though a valid criticism I would gladly accept all the movies looking too clean in exchange for being able to see what's on screen. So many movies now are so dark that you can't see what's going on until you're watching it at home and can increase the brightness. Dune being one of the worst offenders in recent memory, and I love both of the films, but they don't make it easy to see what's going on in the theater. I don't remember that being an issue until recently.

Everyone is becoming worse at writing just as audiences are becoming worse at paying attention.
