It's no surprise there are a lot of women watching this movie. It is still normal for moms to stay home with kids over the summer. Lots of kids (and their moms) going to watch movies during the week. In the middle of the day

At no point is the online ticket checkout asking foe the genders of people going to the movie. Must be an extrapolated of polls

I will always be grateful to inside Out because my autistic son (who was about 5 when it came out) loved it and used the movie characters to express his feelings, which was especially important because he had a lot of trouble communicating. I still remember one day being all frustrated and mad about something he needed and he just tugged my shirt and said "mommy, can you be Joy?" Sounds silly now but it was revelatory for us. We must have watched it s hundred times over the years.

Now I have an 11 year old girl with a lot of social anxiety so the second movie really felt close. My daughter was like "yes! THAT." And it helped us talk about her emotions because we could both pretend we were talking about the movie.

Illumination makes fun movies for kids, Pixar now makes movies aimed at middle aged females that sometimes also appeal to kids.
Strange that I and many other men seemed to enjoy the movie then.
Absolutely doesn't mean you can't enjoy them - just that the primary audience for these movies is female and the audience numbers bear that out. A lot of guys enjoyed the Barbie movie, but they weren't the primary intended audience for that movie either.

The Illumination movies are more gender neutral

The primary audience for these movies are families.

The Barbie movie was a great watch for a guy as well. Look how much fun Ken had being in a patriarchal society for the first time. I thought that was a great way to show the difference on how men and women experience the world differently.
I went on dad's day and the theatre was packed. It's a great family movie.

Meh...I thought is was fine. I'll disagree with many on here though that I don't think it comes close to the first one.

My kids all thought the same. They all liked it, but all agreed that it wasn't as good as the first.

The whole gender debate is weird. I'm a man. I took my kids to see this with me on fathers day. We had a good time. I like hanging out with my kids, and we had a good time in the theater. We didn't dislike the movie. We just didn't think it was as good as the first Inside Out which is ok since we all consider that movie outstanding.

As a clinical therapist, this movie is absolutely amazing for opening a dialogue with your kids and teens on emotions and why we feel a certain way sometimes.

I will watch this movie and recommend it to clients.
Genuinely curious….in your line of work which movie do you hold in higher regard in relating/recommending it to clients….the first one or this one?

They're both great to me but curious to hear your take.

The first one focuses mainly on how any overpowering emotion regardless of its purpose is negative and all emotions are important when kept in check.

This one does focus on the same thing but deals with more complex (or new) emotions as you come of age and the complexity of building your character and beliefs.

I think the first one is great for smaller kiddos but I appreciate the complexity of the second inside out 2 because more emotions are involved.

I do like the second one better personally. They shed some light on cognitive distortions we process (irrational thoughts) and doing a great job on focusing on thinking errors ( "I'm not good enough" was said for a long time by Riley's mind in the movie) but we can challenge those thoughts of self doubt before the turn into negative core beliefs. There's usually plenty of evidence we dismiss because we are hyper fixated on only our negatives.
Awesome! Appreciate the professional perspective.

If you had your choice and they made a 3rd one, what would you want them to focus on?

I don't know if there should be a third one for Disney/Pixar.

Depends how dark you want to get.

Riley's dad leaves the family and she enters depression and guilt. (new emotions!)

Riley gets her heart broken by her boyfriend and isolates for months. Becomes anorexic because she thinks her boyfriend left her because of size.

Riley enters teenage angst, starts hanging out with the wrong crowd and lying more to her parents.

Riley starts abusing fentanyl, has a suicide attempt after trying to OD on her mom's oxycodone stash.

-

I think it would be cool if they enter the college years for number 3. We can see more anxiety, young love and self-image issues highlighted. Riley seeking therapy to improve her mental wellness in college. Maybe Riley being exposed to temptation vs studying properly and doing the right things in school.

She could have a nervous breakdown from the pressures of school and being a collegiate hockey player and having to deal with the issues of being a female in a patriarchal society.
Riley goes to Texas A&M experiences BAS and then ...............

Man, I was so excited for this movie. Inside Out is my favorite animated film ever and one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. It just hits me in a deep way.

I went into this one with no spoilers, no info, no prep. My first reaction to it was that it was really good, I did like it a lot, but it fell short of the first one. The story seemed a bit repetitive of the first movie.

That said, I just saw it last night and immediately came to this thread this morning, and reading the other posts has already given me a deeper appreciation for what I just watched. I sometimes need to process things for a bit. I think I need to see this a second time to truly evaluate it.

My daughter is almost 12 and is full of anxiety so I was excited that she was with us to watch this. She didn't say much about it but I look forward to watching it with her again and hopefully using it to help her in certain ways. The first movie helped our whole family. It legitimately changed how I see myself and my thoughts and my feelings.

I loved how creative this one was, just like the first one. Using the belief system as the main thread of the movie was so cool. All the creative brain things continue to impress me (back of the mind, stream of consciousness, sar-chasm, etc). The tone and the animation and the music were all great. It made me feel some of the same things as the first one. The last 20 minutes or whatever did get to me, not as much as the first, but it definitely did.

As I talk about it, it's already growing on me. My initial reaction was probably B+? I have a feeling I'll move it up to an A when I watch it again. God bless the people that made these two movies and made them so well.

One of my favorite parts was Dad saying to Mom "Important weekend for us. What'd'ya wanna do? " and without hesitating Mom says "Well we could clean the garage, mow the lawn, etc"

He just rolls his eyes and it was the MOST RELATABLE EYEROLL OF ALL TIME.

My 15-year old daughter saw it last night and said she bawled uncontrollably toward the end because she fully identified with the main character and all the teen angst. I think they really nailed that for what kids these days are feeling.

Why do this? It doesn't add to the conversation and just an attack on people with different views than you in a snarky and in your mind funny way.

Plenty of joy left when we grow up. Reality sets in sure, but we have to remember to hunt the good stuff

Took the family this afternoon and all three kids and all the adults loved it. Very good movie in that I think everyone who sees it will be both entertained and benefit from the introspection and conversations it'll spur.

Loved it...my 14 year old is dealing with a lot of this and we are both awkward in talking about feelings so this helps so much. Also i absolutely loved how anxiety took over imaginationland at night. This still is my biggest issue going to sleep every night and I'm 41.

Try data dumping all your thoughts on a nightstand journal. Write down everything on your mind and whatever you are worried about over the next few days, appointments, work, projects, etc

You'll sleep better knowing that you can wake up in the morning have everything written down that you need to complete

Wife and I were considering try asking our kids soon. Son 10 and daughter 8…not sure if the emotions and puberty angle is something I really want to introduce.

Reading the thread it sounds like lots of positive reviews from parents and older kids/daughters but wasn't sure on mine.

Was Toy Story a movie for boys and middle aged men?

4 was very much both. I took my toddler son to that we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was better the second time when I saw the whole plot without having to run him for potty breaks.

The puberty angle is a nothing-factor as far as kids are concerned. It's an alarm on the control board that goes off, new emotions show up, and Riley acts like an overly moody preteen for about 60 seconds (or less).

There are zero things shown or discussed that would be an issue for kids that old to see.

That was such a kind considerate thought. I will try it. My weird coping mechanism is to put on a show I've seen 100x that I don't have to watch but it drowns out my thoughts. This sounds healthier.

Same article says they paid Poehler $5 million and she got creative consultancy on the role, so yeah $100 k would be a lowball, especially as Kaling and Hader have been very successful across multiple platforms in the past decade.

Side note, my kids saw Poehler "in real life" for the first time as the "cool mom" on 2004's Mean Girls this past weekend. They were appropriately horrified.
