Awe man….

I grew up in the 80's and early 90's and loved all of his movies. I've swung back to some of them as an adult and most of the movies were pretty bad but I still liked his performances and characters which probably speaks to his acting abilities.

What happened to him later on? Couldn't get work? Retired? He seems to have dropped off the face of the earth acting wise.

ETA: just checked his IMDB. WOW….he worked all the way up until recently and I can't say that I've heard of much of anything he's done since about 1995 (and that was an Iron Eagle sequel that probably went straight to video). I have zero memory of him being in Boardwalk Empire and I think I remember his bit part in Watchmen but that's about it. That seems like a wild slide in acting options/choices from an Academy Award winner 40 years ago.

Yeah I edited my post. That's a pretty wild list of non-mainstream things he was involved with over the last 30 years.

I can still hear him saying "MAY-O-NAISE".

Loved him as Chappy in Iron Eagle of course, but my favorite role is still Diggstown.

It's an great older movie & I would say virtually anyone who has seen it would agree (as long as they aren't of the TIKTOK level of attention span.)
I would definitely not say it is underrated or Gossett's performance overlooked. He won an academy award for his role, the movie won or was nominated for many other awards.
It was the third highest grossing movie that year.

Talking recent performances, he was enjoyable in Watchmen (HBO), which is absolutely worth watching if you haven't seen it.

Obviously he was amazing in Officer and a Gentleman but randomly, two nights ago on one of the rerun channels, I watched an episode of "The Rockford Files" with him in it.

My sister in law met him back in the late 80's or early 90's. I let her and my brother know he passed and asked her about that meeting.

She said she was on a girls night out in Austin. Her group was heading into a club and they saw Mr. Gossett talking to a homeless man. A cop approached the two of them and thought that Louis was loitering.

My SIL's group said "he's with us" and they brought him in with them so he wouldn't get harassed by the cop who didn't know who he was.

They hung with him and had drinks. He was in town to shoot a film. They said he was really great to chat with and couldn't believe how down to earth he was. No ego at all.

The next week my brother and SIL went to Steamboat to see a band and Lou walked in and saw her and gave them a big wave and smile.

I was 16 when this movie came out, saw it in the theater.

Still good today.
