From one of my favorite writer/directors, James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Logan, Ford v Ferrari), the new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown began filming last week in New York, with the first images from the set below.

As for the full cast list, this is a pretty great lineup...

Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan
Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez
Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo
Edward Norton as Pete Seeger
Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash
Nick Offerman as Alan Lomax
P.J. Byrne as Harold Leventhal

And the synopsis...

Quote:

A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Bob Dylan's arrival to New York City in 1961 seeking to find his hero, an ailing Woody Guthrie. He is embraced by the New York folk scene (Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and others) who recognize his talent. He finds gigs in downtown clubs and soon becomes a sensation, under contract at Columbia Records. The film follows Dylan's ascendance into a cultural phenomenon, his strong relationships in the folk music world and his ultimate transition away from folk music, forming a band, confusing his fans and disappointing the music community who first took him in.

No release date yet, but I'm assuming 2025, unless Mangold is somehow able to turn this thing around by November/December, in time for the awards season...

I suffered through that movie with my wife 2 weeks ago. Apparently Priscilla had a heart of gold and Elvis was just the worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrst.

Also the guy playing Elvis declined a chance to audition for Superman to play Elvis.

Also he's 6 foot 5, apparently Elvis could have also played swingman for the Memphis Grizzlies.

I'd watch that.

But I think Hamish Linklater would be better casting.

Loggins was a lot of fun on the We Are the World Netflix doc. If you like Bob Dylan, that's a must-watch. He is incredibly awkward through the making of it because he's not a tradtional singer, and Stevie Wonder ends up showing him how to sing his part by doing a crazy good impersonation of Dylan.

Yeah, I was originally gonna ask if Stevie Wonder was the voice consultant on the Dylan movie but I wasn't sure if anyone would get it.

My brother and I saw Stevie in concert in Houston around 2008 or so and he did a dead-on Charlie Rich and sang "Behind Closed Doors"

If anything, this movie is going to look incredible. From the director...

Love Dylan, looks promising. I think its a tricky story to get right, because I don't think his origin story fits the typical "walk hard" storyline so I hope they don't shoehorn it into one.

Seeing as this movie is made by Searchlight, which is the "indie" subsidiary of 20th Century Studios, which is owned by Disney, hopefully this trailer is set for release this week with Deadpool & Wolverine (another Disney release, obviously).

It's just that no one was expecting this at all, considering they just wrapped filming earlier this month. But to already have a trailer ready would indicate an awards season 2024 release, which would be so awesome. And if so, showing off Chalamet as Dylan in front of millions this weekend, in order to start building the hype, does make sense.

Man, what a pleasant surprise, either way.

Fantastic teaser trailer.

Chalamet sounds incredible as Dylan, shockingly so.

Now my number one most anticipated movie for the rest of the year.

Hard Rains Gonna Fall is my favorite Dylan song. So happy that's what they chose for this trailer.

That looked great. He looked great. Really excited for this.

You go back and look at some of his lyrics and you'll never understand how a 20-year old Bob Dylan wrote the songs that he wrote.

Seemed to have an understanding of the world that transcended his age and experience.

I guess this is what they meant about making a deal with the devil.

Some folks got that extra that you can't explain where it comes from.

Townes Van Zandt another one that fits in this category.

Will be watching in December. Trailer reminds me of the recent movie Elvis.

I agree. His early stuff his so prescient it's hard to fathom how he was able to write his early songs. Although his relationship with Suze I think inspired him to a very large degree. Young love does a lot.

The genius of Dylan is that his songwriting acumen is not constrained but eras. He just has keep his writing at a high level even when his voice has gotten older and more frail.

No knock on Dylan. Saw him when he was older and thoroughly enjoyed myself while knowing he just doesn't sound his best.

Was definitely surprised by the sound, impressive. I guess I'm in the minority in general re: Chalamet, but IMO he just has absolutely zero charisma. He is the Colin Robinson of actors, there's like a negative 'there' there.

I'm buying everything Chalamet is selling. I don't really dig Dylan but I trust James Mangold to make an entertaining and well-directed film.
So count me in!

Agreed. I like Chalamet and I like Mangold, never liked Dylan but interested more for them than for Bob Dylan.
