In the first movie the science they are using is literally the same thing that was being done in the field the decade the movie came out. They were just trying to study the tornadoes to get better early warning. Sure, there is some suspension of belief in how they interact with the tornadoes, but not at the level of this movie.

And the science of this movie makes some huge leaps and then doesn't even follow its own logic in the end. And the interactions with the tornadoes are so unbelievable. Like, I need to know what kind of glass the windows in their vehicles are made out of.

If you listen to Josh Pate at all, who is an amateur storm chaser, he said it best. The science behind Twister is dumb, but the culture of storm chasing is 100% dead on. It's a lot like Varsity Blues of the disaster movie world.

I just think there isn't much science in Twister. I mean, they use jargon a lot and incorrectly, but it isn't really used to explain anything of meaning. Its just about the team chasing tornadoes to achieve the goal. So perhaps the science in that movie is dumb, but it doesn't really have any meaningful impact on the story.

Twisters has science front and center and its just a bit confounding. Thats why I am picking at it, its central to the whole story.

I've chased a lot and I agree. I was annoyed at the way they used the jargon a bit and when they showed model data vs current radar and some of the specifics, but then I started thinking about how it would look to someone who didn't know what the jargon meant and I think they do capture the essence of what chasers are like. I think in the end that's why it feels right. I've seen nothing but good responses from the chase community to the movie. It's definitely hyperbolic and not fully accurate (95% of chasing is boring ass driving or sitting around) but chasers DO hang out at gas stations like that and the divisions between science teams and chasers are real. I don't know, it just feels like a good film that captures the vibes right.

Nope. TOTO was deployed in the 70s and early 80s which is why it was inspiration for Twister and even then it was substantially different from what happened in Twister. The 90s was when we saw the first mobile dopplers and that was the state of the art tornado research at the time (and currently, quite frankly). Getting small probes into the storm isn't nearly as useful as getting high resolution radar scans of tornadic storms. This remains the case this year!

Also, they literally hang from a pipe with a belt in an EF-5 and live as if they wouldn't be torn completely to shreds. They see tornadoes non stop for a 24 hour period as if they atmosphere is capable of that. They survive multiple close encounters with tornadoes where they would likely suffer quiet traumatic injuries and drive all over the state of OK as if they can just teleport around. It is completely unrealistic. Completely!!!! I cannot emphasize enough how bad the science is in the first movie and how little it actually matters. There are things that are equally dumb in this movie that completely ignore physics but that is a given for these movies and anyone who cannot just ignore that aspect of things will probably never be able to enjoy either of them.

I am not saying the movie is realistic, I'm saying it is based in more realism. And the encounters with the tornadoes are definitely a crazy stretch. As is the truncated timeline....but come on, that helps the movie a ton with its quick pacing. And I'm on board for all that fun.

This movie is much slower, so maybe all the belief stretching and weird science has more time to marinate. And the science I am referring to, to be specific is killing a tornado. and the multiple times they just drive into a tornado and how their experiments don't work on an EF1, they make changes and she barrels into a giant EF5 in a truck and while everything is being ripped to shreds around her, she and the truck are totally fine.

But I think, with some better pacing that would have all been fine, but instead we spent so much screen time on Javi and his weird business scheme.

Also, I really wanted to like this movie and it just didn't work for me. But I get that it clearly did for others and thats fine.

Yeah I mean I figured that's what you were referring to and it's completely implausible on any scale for that to work. But maybe I just internalized that from the trailers knew that it was coming so I didn't care about it at all last night.

I feel you though, I'm not trying to attack your opinion! It's definitely OK to not like it (obviously!).

Somehow the part that always has bugged me the most in the original movie is right after they get the sensors into the F-5 (not EF-5 yet) - they immediately have live data, and then the one girl says the tornado is shifting direction. No way she knows what any of that data means yet...

Everything else - I can accept!

One of the funniest things about movies is that any time one movie focuses on something that is somewhat specific, the people that have knowledge of that specific topic get all up in arms while everyone else just enjoys the entertainment.

Casino point about the science of twister(s). Another one was 1917 and the German pilot stabbing the guy.

This would be the equivalent of me getting mad about the old war vets driving the ships and the way they operating those ships in battleship. These aren't documentaries.

Man that was a ton of fun, science be damned. Summer movie at its best

Background cast definitely wasn't quite as good as the original, but as someone said earlier, the quality of actors was also way higher.

I do think I'm now gonna struggle to see Corenswet as Superman.

The really need to include this scene in his movie

Great summer blockbuster watched in XD in a crowded theater and every generation enjoyed it from the 11 year old to the 71 year old. Glen Powell is a mega star. Movies are not dead. Love how it just keeps moving so you don't have to worry about the ridiculous science of it - just go for the ride.

Would you say the first one was? Was about on par with that in terms of age appropriate.
I would say both are fine, but everyone is different.

As a storm chaser I'm massively annoyed with the rodeo scene. One, they previewed it with tv watching and all news stations talking about an outbreak. Then our heros both go to rodeo to flirt and don't check their phones until a tornado is like half mile away.

Sure. As a chaser they would have been checking phones every five minutes to look at radar and known it was coming. Plus their chase teams would have been blowing up their phones about incoming weather.

The idea they would have no idea weather is coming until they got the EMS alert with the rest of crowd was Charles Barkley turrible. .
