so the Underrated Rush Tunes thread got me thinking......

if someone were to ask you, "which songs are underrated by X band", which bands do you feel that you're so completely familiar with that you're confident that you know 100% of their catalog?

Here's how to frame your answer:
1) Studio Only
2) Studio and Other (bootleg, special release, etc.).

live albums are not part of the criteria and bands like the Sex Pistols, Joy Division, and Blind Melon, who released just a few albums, don't count....we're talking a large catalog of music.........

1) Grateful Dead, REM, Allman Brothers, Phish
2) Grateful Dead

Led Zeppelin
The Offspring

Pretty much the only two for me.

1. Black Crowes, Jimmy Buffett
2. Black Crowes

Not sure I've seen a treasure trove of Buffett unreleased stuff, so can't claim that. I will say an extension of the Crowes is relative familiarity with their soloist/side work in addition to the band proper catalog.

Probably the only successful (not a one album type band) where I've owned all their albums was The Police.

I know a ton of the catalogue for Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen (70's to early 2000's for Bruce but stopped listening to his newer stuff).

I feel like I could go pretty deep on Black Crowes, Tool, and Hendrix. The challenge would be, I don't know the names and which album for all the songs, just bc most of my exposure over the last 15 years has been shuffled playlists.

I love the Dead, but don't feel like I could ever be confident on my knowledge of live shows.

The Police, Hendrix and Sublime I could go 100% or pretty close because of the fewer number of albums. I could go 100% on the RHCP between 1989-2007, but I'd be hazy on some of the songs before and after those years.

Man my first inclination is I have quite a few. Let me start to list

Metallica - 11 albums
AIC - 6
Type O Negative - 7
Ghost - 5
Muse - 9
Opeth - 13
Devin Townsend/DTP/DTB (ok maybe there's a few albums I'm not totally familiar with) - 15ish
Pantera - 5 (ain't nobody asking/talking about the first 4)
Pushmonkey - 4
Tool - 5
Vola - 3
AwolNation - 4

I'm leaving out bands with less than 3 albums.

There's gotta be another criteria of number of albums I think.

I love a LOT of bands that have <4 albums. Incredibly easy to know all their stuff. Even for me.

For large number of albums, I'd say I'm very comfortable with Metallica and my most confident would be SlipKnot. Add Trivium to know every song. And Chimaira.

Rush - studio albums, live albums, some interviews, no idea about bootlegs

Scorpions - studio albums, live albums and only a fraction of bootlegs.
I discovered that you can go on YouTube and type in "Scorpions" and any year, especially in the 1970s-1980s and find all kinds of bootleg concert recordings. It's never ending.

There are other bands like Dokken or Iron Maiden or Dio where after a certain point, I don't really care to listen to anything new that was recorded years after their heyday.

Studio only for me, I would say these are the ones I know most deeply:

  • The Beatles
  • Alice in Chains

I think here are a couple of others that I feel good about discussing at length and would not be lost in any conversation about them:

  • Deftones
  • Pearl Jam

I would say that listening to music by album is a great way to establish a stronger connection to the releases and understanding of the artist/band, and make it easier to discuss more than "yea that song is good" or "this is their best song", etc.

The Avett Brothers is probably the only band where I could say 100%, both albums and others. Sublime would be close as well.

This is a sidebar, but do yall remember how hard it was to get bootlegs back in the day? Nobody took more of my money on albums than when I was hunting 311 bootlegs circa 1996 or so. There were two in particular that I remember paying close to a $100 for, each. Spaced Out and Teenieweenie. Crazy to think now all you have to do is go to Archive.org and find just about anything you want.

Oh you want to listen to a 311 live show? Here's 260GB of bootlegs.

You want to hear the original lineup of the Smashing Pumpkins play Tower Records in Chicago in 1993? They got you covered.

Sad you never saw Elliot Smith? Here's 160 shows.

"That's all well and good, MW03," you say. "But I'm a Grearful Dead fan and I am specifically looking for a show they played in 1973 at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium." Guess what?

Scorpions and Rush are two impressive catalogs to know throughout simply because of their longevity and ability to produce recordable quality over those multiple decades. I tip my cap to you!

Mid-late 90s I used to circle the date on the calendar when the "record show" would come to town, usually at the Ramada on Texas Avenue next to JJs. Spent a lot of money every time they came through. I can dig through stacks of albums all day long if someone's not there to stop me.

For Rush, I started with "Moving Pictures" and stayed up to date with everything after that.
During the 1990s, I was a regular at CD Warehouse in Round Rock until I had acquired all the Rush albums and compilations.

For the Scorpions, my entry point was "Love at First Sting" which came out my 9th grade year in Saudi Arabia (highest level of school for Expats at that time).

I wound up partying with the late James Kottak regularly during 2005-2007 (although not as hard as he was partying obviously) but I have to confess, I'm weak on the recent stuff from the James Kottak era and beyond.

I really didn't listen to anything prior to "Love at First Sting" until about 2015 when I saw Michael Schenker in concert at Whisky a Go Go. That's when I got into Lovedrive and some of the earlier stuff. After that experience, I actually went out and bought "Lovedrive" on vinyl at some vintage record shop in Frankfurt. I especially love that it says that it was made in West Germany.

It wasn't until the Covid perennial work from home era that I got into listening to Scorpions stuff from pre-1977. Like I said earlier, just go on YouTube, type in Scorpions, add a year and you've got 45-90 minutes worth of listening. Some of the old concerts from Europe in the 1970s are great to listen to.

There are more than a few bands I go deep into the catalog on.

NONE more than Widespread Panic. I would also suggest that WP has perhaps the biggest catalog of any band I can imagine. They've never played the same show twice. Don't even plan the 2nd set until the break. Every show recorded and a big supply of studio albums.

Honorable mention to Willie.
