I don't want to be an ass... but Sarah Snook is one of those people I look at and can't believe she is only 36. I mean... there's no way I look that old...

Natalie Portman is a dry-aged porterhouse to Pugh's Taco Bell steak burrito.

The burrito will get the job done. Barely.

No, it's Andrew Scott, nominee for All of Us Strangers. He was a bad guy in Spectre as well, and starred as the love interest in Fleabag.

Glad to see Oppenheimer cleaned up. Truly great movie.

And frankly past time for Nolan to snag Best Director or Best Picture. Probably the best director working and he is 12 movies in.

Didn't something come out a couple of years ago that the GGs are basically rigged or bought or something. Did they do anything to make them more legit? Or did everyone collectively decide they don't care?

Yeah, the word has always been that studios could buy certain categories/awards. The Globes voting body was just a bunch of random foreign journalists who wanted to schmooze with movie stars/throw a big party, and they could not care less about the integrity if there was additional $$$ to be had. The studios saw it as a marketing opportunity regardless, so they all swept it under the rug and a good time was had by all.

But then there was a big expose a few years ago about the lack of diversity among the Globes membership, and how they'd actively kept out people of color, both among their own ranks and when it came certain awards. Any corruptness beyond that was just the cherry on top. This was around the time of the pandemic, so the whole thing imploded and they lost their deal with NBC (who was paying them over $60M/year for the rights to air the show).

Ultimately, building on what C@LAg said above, the Globes agreed to revamp their membership - it's now way more diverse, with more respectable journalists, apparently - the former Globes president was expelled, and apparently the whole buying-awards thing was nipped in the bud, but who really knows.

Either way, with the new changes, CBS agreed to a one-year deal to air the awards (for WAY less than NBC's $60M), but a new network + the recent controversy meant that no legit host was going to touch the gig with a ten-foot pole, hence finally landing on no-name Jo Koy just ten days before the event. But then, to everyone's surprise, the stars showed up in full force - even Taylor Swift - and it turned out to be a pretty good night overall (minus the opening monologue, of course). At the very least, everyone seems happy with the winners, who came across as genuine and earned. My guess is ratings will be respectable, especially with popular movies like Oppenheimer and Barbie winning, and that CBS will sign a multi-year deal at this point. If ratings are higher than expected, who knows, maybe other networks will bid as well.

Point is, despite the Jo Koy disaster, it feels like the Globes are officially back and more "legit" than ever, so I'm guessing/hoping it only gains steam from here. All other noise aside, it really is one of the best awards shows, with a more relaxed/party atmosphere, all the drinking, etc.

Matt Belloni sharing roughly the same sentiment in his just-released newsletter, with some added behind-the-scenes drama...

Quote:

One quick note about the Globes: We'll see about the ratings, but on-screen, tonight is definitely a win. Tons of stars, credible (if predictable) winners, nice speeches, no memorable gaffes, and Taylor showed up. If anything, it was too professional, and Jo Koy bombed as badly as any host I've ever seen except maybe James Franco at the 2011 Oscars. But those issues won't prevent owners Eldridge and Penske Media from securing a long-term broadcast deal in a contract year. Now, only the ratings matter.

Behind the scenes, however, things were… less great. Say what you will about the H.F.P.A., but they knew how to deal diplomatically with the studios. The new team made a lot of enemies. Last night, executives were fuming when the seat assignments finally went out and many who were used to sitting in the pit were relegated to the second or third tiers, thanks to all the new nominees from expanded categories and that larger stage configuration. A couple people actually contemplated no-showing the event. That sounds trivial, but these appearances do matter, and the studios buy the tables and pay to bring the stars. Alienating them is an issue, and we'll see if they exact a bit of revenge for next year's show or via advertising in Penske's publications, as one suggested to me.

And, of course, I couldn't help notice that while the vast majority of the actual Globes voters were not invited to the show, there at one of the 200s tables was Kelly Bush Novak, the leader of the publicist push that ultimately got the H.F.P.A. disbanded. Other P.R.s were invited to the show as well, a telling detail about what the New Globes values. Overall, however, a successful night for the show.

Can someone define that last category and why it's needed? Are they combining spectacle and revenue into a category? That's what it felt like.
Isn't it a category looking more at pop culture influence or something?
The internet tells me its an award for movies that grossed at least $150M in revenue with $100M having to be earned domestically.

So, it's a random popularity award more than anything. I say random since Taylor Swift's concert(?) was part of it and is not a film(?).

She had a screened show in movie theaters, so yea it counts. They aren't looking at her concert tour as the entry itself, just the actual movie.

Well, that was probably helpful for her then because I know she needs the money.

Thanks for that explanation.

It actually clears up a couple of jokes Ricky Gervais told last time he hosted, like when he said there wasn't going to be an In Memorium presentation (paraphrasing) because he looked at the list of who died, and it just wasn't diverse enough.

And making a joke that the HFPA were just "very racist".

In his latest Netflix standup he talks about how well that went down with the crowd, and I'm certain he won't ever get invited by Hollywood to host a show.

I like Jo Koy's standup, but he is comparable to George Lopez for the Asian community imo. It is always about how growing up in an Asian family is nuts. It was definitely the wrong type of crowd for him.

The Jim Gaffigan joke was the best part, mostly because I wasn't expecting Jim Gaffigan to ever touch something that hardcore. I bet every comic loved it, and every film person groaned.
