How long do you want to ignore this user?
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Season 1 (8 Episodes)
February 22, 2024

I desperately want this to be good. Loved the original series. It already looks better than the live action M. Night Shyamalan catastrophe. I know Netflix and the original creators had a falling out and they left so who knows how it'll turn out. I'm probably too hopeful.

Setting the bar super high there...

I would also love to know what the fallout was with Netflix.

I remember that, just curious about more specifics of the disagreements. Never have seen anything detailing what they disagreed with Netflix about.

Can we at least say his name right in this version???

It's Aang! 'Ayng' instead of 'Anng'

Based on the trailers, they make me suspect that the disagreement was that they didnt want to make exactly the same thing again but thats what Netflix wanted…

I suspect they wanted to make a more adult oriented version but Netflix didnt want to get too far away from what worked on Nickelodeon

The one thing that's gonna take some getting used to for me is their voices.

But what about cabbage man!!!!!!

In all seriousness, the kids had a fun time picking out all the characters in the trailer including Bumi (sp?) and Jett

Also, I had no idea the actor playing Sokka (Ian Ousley) is from College Station.

I know this is an old comment but based on the recent interviews and what not it definitely seems like the inverse of this is probably more accurate.

I'm curious to see what kind of response this gets from fans. I'm in a wait and see pattern on this and I just don't really trust the quick twitter bites that get posted on this board, good or bad.

Out today.

Watched the first episode. Its good, not great. Pacing was my biggest issue because everything seems incredibly rushed. Lots of exposition.

CGI and bending look pretty darn good. Most of the kids are doing a good job acting. Some are a little stiff and will hopefully improve.

Are there Cherokee Indians in College Station?

Watched a little. They did a great job with casting. Everyone makes sense except Azula could have been picked better.

I feel like the most important character to really get right was Iroh and Im not sure they did.

The stand out so far is Gyatso's mole/skin tag.

Overall I'd give it a 7 out of 10 for the whole season. Good, but not really close to as good as the show was. Still think it was good enough to get a 2nd season for Book 2 and let the cast continue to gel together.

I thought the effects and CGI looked really good. Bending looked great imo. I thought Zuko and Sokka were done pretty well. I thought Aang was decent. Katara was missing something, mainly her anger from the show. Like above some of the chemistry was very wooden. Part of the issue was the writing be pretty clunky.

I didn't like how they handled Bumi. Thought that was bad

I'm not sure I agreed with some of the changes they made to the story that weren't necessary because it didn't change the story. Just felt like they made changes for changes sake. I knew going in it wasn't going to be a shot for shot copy so I'm not terribly upset about it.

I thought they really nailed the smaller characters so far.

Such as Jet, Suki, June

Good call on Katara, she should have been a little more frustrated when the master would not train her.

Second episode and Suki has been the best of the castings so far.

Boomi for the win..

Outside of a few omissions from the source material, they've been really on mark.

And Ihros song in the background during the flashback was extremely nice

O and SECRET TUNNEL

Two episodes in, the acting from the main characters is pretty bad. Aang and Zuko are the best of them, imo.

I did think the second episode was much better than the first. I will continue watching.

Agreed on Iroh being a miss so far.

It was a pretty good adaptation, all of the characters are pretty true to their characters and mannerisms and story lines. Kid actors are all decent enough, it's ultimately a show intendes for teens
Could not disagree more on Iroh

I thought the uncle was done well. I'm curious where they think the miss is with the character?

And agree, Suki was great. Too bad she was only in one episode.

Finished up the season, and I thought every episode was stronger than the last. Would recommend.

As for my Iroh comment, I just didn't think he was as charismatic I guess as he was portrayed in the cartoon. I know that's kind of a hard thing to define or portray.

I thought Uncle Iroh was a good cast. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee was so good in Kim's Convenience. I think watching him in that helped me like him as Uncle Iroh. I loved how emotional he was with Zuko, even tearing up. He's proud of his nephew you could tell. It was pretty apparent this Iroh would go to great lengths to protect him just like the animated version conveyed.

Just got renewed for Seasons 2 & 3. I imagine they did both so they can go ahead and film it back to back before the kids get much older
