Jimmy sung about the beach, being a beach bum, the Caribbean, and margaritas, performed on stage in shorts and barefoot, and turned that lifestyle into a billion dollar empire. His shows meant summer was here and if you weren't at the beach on vacation his music and his shows would take you there. Legend.
Well said.

Listened to him casually in the 90s when my dad would play it, but really got into him when I bought my first new vehicle in 04. It was an F150 that came with Sirius and I found the Margaritaville station.

Had Alexa play his music this morning. Second song that came on - "Roll me up" with Willie. Not sure I would have predicted Jimmy to go first.

I don't even know how many of his concerts I've been to.
He would play Nissan pavilion every here, and most years a big group of us would go. Some friends would rent a party bus, and the tailgate would be long and eventful. For many years it might be the only time I saw some of this friends. Being the Florida guy, I tended to be the only one who knew the words to most songs.
I remember before I got into his music, I was at a bar in Ft. Meyers, and some guy on guitar played Changes in latitude. I didn't even know it was a Jimmy song at that point, but I remember thinking what a cool little tune it was. Point being, yeah Jimmy made a lot of his money and fame off of the beach bum tropical dream persona/dream, but the underlying music was really good. Better than he got credit for.
Big loss for his fans, music, and fun generally.

Epstein had Jimmy and Jane's phone numbers written down, but nothing more than that. No flight logs or anything like that.

My wife says there's a look that comes over my face when Margaritvaille comes on the radio. It's not that I'm a drinker, it's that it reminds me of a happy weekend in Galveston with all my best friends from A&M when I was 21 or 22, doing nothing more than living at the beach, sleeping in a hammock, and laughing until it hurt.

When the movie Urban Cowboy came out, one of my favorite parts was when they played the Buffet song, Hello Texas as Travolta was rolling into Houston. Not one of his bigger songs, but one of my favorites because it brings back memories.

I love that song. One of his best.

There was a year or so a while back where I suffered from pretty serious anxiety and occasional panic attacks. Whether on the road or at work, his music was often my "treatment" in those moments and genuinely helped me calm down, regroup and relax. Almost like genuine medicine.

The best job i ever had was working at a Boy Scout camp on the Aquatics program. Jimmy was always playing in our pool change room/office or back at the staff campsite. Spent many nights just listening to Jimmy with some good mentors and friends as we discussed what we knew about the world at 16-22 years old. Whenever I hear his music I'm reminded of simpler happier times with good people

Don't forget he also wrote.

Salty Piece of Land is a great read

Tales From Margaritaville is one of the funniest books I have ever read

Tales from Margaritaville and Where is Joe Merchant are both great. Not high literature but great reads.

Wouldn't they listen to Jimmy Buffett songs instead? The pina colada song is by Rupert Holmes.

Great old Letterman clip where he does my favorite (Distantly in love) and Come Monday. Just him and a guitar.

In the lead in interview he almost comes off as shy, which is interesting. Songs start at about 4 minutes.

I'd be remiss not to include his fantastic margaritaville cameo in Jurassic World.

The outpouring of praise for JB -- much of it from fellow artists who knew him and/or were inspired by him -- has been amazing. Lots of personal stories and memories.

Also amazing has been the response from venues, many of which posted the number of times Buffett performed on their stages. 58 times here. 47 times there. Incredible numbers built up over 50 years of touring. Not too many artists can claim that kind of track record.

Happy to report that Kyle Field played at least 3 Jimmy Buffet tunes during those extended TV timeouts and breaks in the action last night.

Loved it.

Thank you for sharing this.

Because I know some of you don't Twit and won't go view that post, I wanted to go ahead and post the text of it because it really is a beautiful tribute by Paul. Also, the songs he is referring here are from his newest unreleased album, so pretty cool that they collaborated so recently. The album is not supposed to come out until later this month, but they have been playing cuts on Radio Margaritaville (SiriusXM ch 24) this week, and that channel is a great listen right now (and always).
Quote:

It seems that so many wonderful people are leaving this world, and now Jimmy Buffett is one of them. I've known Jimmy for some time and found him to be one of the kindest and most generous people.

I remember once on holiday when I had forgotten to bring my guitar and was itching to play. He said he would get me one of his, but I said, 'I'm left-handed'. So, Jimmy had his roadie restring one of his guitars which he loaned me for the duration of the holiday. He then followed this act of generosity by giving me my own beautiful left-handed guitar that had been made by one of his guitar-making pals. It's a beautiful instrument, and every time I play it now it'll remind me of what a great man Jimmy was.

He had a most amazing lust for life and a beautiful sense of humour. When we swapped tales about the past his were so exotic and lush and involved sailing trips and surfing and so many exciting stories that it was hard for me to keep up with him.

Right up to the last minute his eyes still twinkled with a humour that said, 'I love this world and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it'.

So many of us will miss Jimmy and his tremendous personality. His love for us all, and for mankind as a whole.

Last, but not least, is his songwriting and vocal ability. If someone made an interesting remark he repeated it in his gorgeous Louisiana drawl and said, 'That's a good idea for a song'. Most times it didn't take too long for that song to appear. I was very happy to have played on one of his latest songs called 'My Gummy Just Kicked In'. We had a real fun session and he played me some of his new songs. One, in particular, I loved was the song, 'Bubbles Up'. And I told him that not only was the song great but the vocal was probably the best I've heard him sing ever. He turned a diving phrase that is used to train people underwater into a metaphor for life when you're confused and don't know where you are just follow the bubbles - they'll take you up to the surface and straighten you out right away.

So long, Jim. You are a very special man and friend and it was a great privilege to get to know you and love you. Bubbles up, my friend.

Love, Paul

Universally loved is right. I don't know anyone that actively doesn't like him. At most, someone might be indifferent.

Dolly Parton may be the only person on the planet more universally liked than Buffett.
