I have a love/hate attitude toward Dunkirk.
This was a movie that me, as both an avid reader of WWII history and a WWII warplane nut, I loved. It carried a unique Chris Nolan signature with respect to time, and it didn't tell the story of Dunkirk in an expected linear fashion as a result. Saw it 3 times in the theater.
But. There's always a but.
Two "lasts" happened in 2017 preceding my Dad's passing in early 2018. The last of those lasts was his last trip to Kyle Field, where we got to watch Auburn kick A&M's ass. So on that day in 2021 when A&M dropped kicked the Tigers, I was probably more elated than I've ever been for an A&M game, as I do recall saying aloud "that one's for you Dad!"
The first of those lasts was my Dad's last trip to a movie theater (these were two of the things that my Dad and I did together, A&M football and movies). As it happened, the movie we saw was Dunkirk. As much as I loved it, my Dad hated it. I mean, it literally put him to sleep. His last comment regarding seeing that movie, a few weeks later, was "that sucked". With something that he truly enjoyed doing with me, I remain saddened that this was the last movie experience we were able to share.
