I think you're looking for the version on Songbook, his box set.

It's my favorite version.

That's it thanks! It's an album only download on iTunes but it might be worth it!

Woof on listening to this Beato guy -- does he usually tell legitimate stories/history? I feel like that was a half-hour of him listening to a lyric then saying the last word then "wow!".

Though I guess to be fair Lightfoot's songs kind of put you in a trance that aren't well served chopped up and analyzed.

He's a major blindspot for me in my musical knowledge. If you had to give me one album to listen to first what would it be?

The obvious answer is Gord's Gold from the mid 70s. It's a greatest hits compilation to that point in his career.

I'm looking for the original version of Canadian Railroad Trilogy (from the 60s) that has a different sound to it than the version on Gord's Gold.

I think the best way is the United Artists Collection. It's a huge double CD.

I normally hate covers due to the next guy changing up the song…

but Deryl Dodd nails Sundown as near as can be to Gordon. Imitation, flattery…

Most of his stuff is good.

His "What makes this song great?" series is good.

His interviews with a lot of musicians are good.

When he hangs out with Rhett Shull and Dave Onorato and just talks music stuff and they play, it's good.

His live chats can be all over the place but are good.

His theory stuff gets a little deep sometimes.

I watch his channel often.

Look for his Top 20 acoustic guitar intros, drum intros, bass, electric guitar, and vocals. All of those are good.

I'll check out his other stuff- guessing the Lightfoot stuff just got thrown together quick so wasn't as nuanced.

I tried to watch a Beato video once and he was slagging Bonzo so I turned it off and never watched another video of his.

It's understandable.

You're pretty emotional.

He praises so much about Led Zeppelin on his channel that it's ridiculous. Sorry you were easily triggered by one comment in one video.

Rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot! Carefree Highway is one of my favorite songs. I heard that song two years ago and probably hadn't heard it in 35 years. What a flood of memories and it's been in my playlist ever since. He was a great singer/song writer. He will be missed!

If you don't know what you're doing, do it quickly.

So glad I got to see him play. It was about 15 years ago at bass hall. He was still great. He and Don Williams are my all time favorites.

I was lucky enough to see Don Williams twice.
Both times I was about 10 feet from him the entire time. Sounded even better in person than on the albums.

Quote:

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'
"Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said
"Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
Such a line, stuck in my mind for decades.

Same for- "Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?"

Edit- waves, not days.
"I did nothing. I did absolutely nothing, and it was everything that I thought it could be."

I was never a fan but dang, Lightfoot had some memorable songs. Hearing them all again has been amazing.

When I was growing up, "If You Could Read My Mind" was on the radio all the time.

Lightfoot - A Song for A Winter's Night

I saw this version on Reddit yesterday after he passed away and really enjoyed the performance. We were lucky enough to see him at the Sam Houston Music Hall in '78. He had so many great songs and hits, but I love his songs, I'm Not Supposed To Care, and The House You Live In.

Another name for singer/songwriter/balladeers I would add to the earlier ones is Al Stewart.

I threw together a quick Top 10 list. Lightfoot's list will match up with anybody. If you go deep and make it a top 50, his catalog will pass by nearly everybody else.

If You Could Read My Mind
Canadian Railroad Trilogy
Sundown
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Carefree Highway
Early Morning Rain
Did She Mention My Name
Beautiful
Minstrel of the Dawn
Christian Island
great list.......need to add an 11th song to it though...........

One thing that his passing and this thread has revealed is that I was too young to fully appreciate his incredible talent when his songs were topping the charts. The man was brilliant. I've been singing Sundown and Rainy Day People straight on for the last couple of days. And I keep thinking about the lyrics "Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours". Genius...

Post 70's it was very difficult to get a lot of folk/americana on the radio, a lot of the times simply due to song length. A 6 minute song meant less songs in between advertisements. When you've got Hotel California playing once every 2 hours you are gonna shy away from anything else over 3-4 minutes. Harry Chapin used to joke about how Cat's In the Cradle wasn't close to his best, but was one of his most radio friendly as far as length.

It's why guys like Christopher Cross damn near vanished overnight shortly after MTV debuted.

Not a huge folk music person, but Dylan and Lightfoot are the only folk artists among my thousand song iTunes playlist.

Sundown being my favorite because there was an artist who performed at a bar in my neighborhood who always had hit on his song list. The Edmund Fitzgerald is tragically beautiful, but it moves me to emotion to the point that I cannot listen to it.
