So if the outside is really doomed and not green then what was up with the giant screen glitch in episode 3 just before the power went out? It was the same clip from the hard drive #18. I'm just not sure how that would have been uploaded without the control room ever seeing it. The show never really mentioned that part again after it happened even though it showed several people seeing the screen.

From the author of the books that consulted on the show:

"I think the latter. There is no good reason I can think of for that scene to appear.
When it was pitched to me, what I imagined is that the screen would flash green in a phosphorescence kinda way, they way a monitor could change colors if you pressed your hand against it too hard, or there was a power spike. Not that they'd show the Carmody cleaning footage. I also would've made it 2-3 frames, rather than linger that long.
Having said that, if you want to come up with a creative reason, it isn't difficult. A former hacker from IT who was sent out to clean (perhaps Carmody herself) tried very hard to get that footage put on the big screen years ago (similar to what Jules did in ep 10). She was unsuccessful, but the video was still loaded up. When the power spiked, her old hack went through temporarily but then the power went off. The dying gasp of a long-dead cleaner who wanted people to see the truth."

this super-critical engineering feat.

I was very curious how using an angle grinder on the side of a bent turbine blade would straighten it out.
But I'm not an engineer or a metal worker so whatever.

Episode 3 fell a little flat for me, but still very good.

When the author was asked about this:
"There are several scenes where I wish I'd been on set to micro-manage. That was definitely one of them. The other thing I wish I'd done is have a group meeting with all the actors to explain how radios work, that you have to release the button after you speak. They used some clever editing and sound fx to hide the latter problem. But the whole generator scene (while exciting) could have been made more realistic with just a little bit of effort. Alas, I was not brought in for those days of prep and shooting."

Thanks for sharing. Very insightful.

Can anyone tell me if season 1 is a clean break per se with the first book, Wool? I'm contemplating getting the books but don't necessarily want to re-hash season 1 if it's 1:1 with the books on timeline.

It had been many years but my memory says that book one ends about where this ends. The books really give a great sense of the entropy of time breaking everything down slowly.

Just checked and Wool was published 2011 and I recall waiting on sequels so I could be wrong.

What a bunch of dummies. Surely some of the older actors had walkie-talkies or CB radios. Or maybe watched Smokey & The Bandit. You'd hope.

Probably any under 40 has never used a radio like that.

Unless I missed it, I still haven't seen an explanation for why Bernard rushes to the server room to shut off her hologram display so she can see the real world.

Could Bernard see what she saw through the visor? I almost feel like he wanted to see what she saw when she topped the hill. I feel like he has no idea about the other silos. He definitely didn't know about the door down below.

Stopped watching the show around episode 4 or so but just caught up on the thread.

The book and the show don't follow super closely as I believe the show goes down a few different paths than the book. Season one ends before book 1 though so if you don't want spoilers stay away.

A rare instance where I think the book was more streamlined and focused, that's why I stopped watching the show. Another reason to caution those enjoying the show to let it play out and read the series after.

It's around halfway. Season 2 will most likely be the other half of Wool. The other two books could easily be 1 or 2 seasons a piece based on how they did this season.

I thought it was a fantastic first season that really built as it went, and really climaxed with the season finale. I've read the books but can't wait for season 2!

Probably going to re-watch S1 to try and gain a deeper understanding of certain things, though

Someone help me connect the dots on the heat tape and supply and her not dying outside? Did IT think she was on to them when she stole the tape and so they came down investigating? I feel dumb not being able to make the connections they obviously wanted us to.

The heat tape IT uses wasn't good quality. That's why people died pretty quickly after being out there. It's also why Bernard was so upset about Jules stealing the tape in the past (maybe she'll figure out it's poor quality). Walker does figure it out and gives her ex-wife (who works in supply) the higher quality heat tape she makes to ensure Jules suit is secured. That's why Jules was able to make it over the hill.

This is a good non-book-spoilers video that catches some things I definitely missed.

Just finished it. Kept getting better and better! The video suggests that the "hologram" Juliette saw was not created by her helmet but was a virtual(?) "dome" created over the Silo that Bernard turned off so that she could see reality. If so, why is there a dome so few will see?

Is Rebecca Ferguson in season 2? I hope she knocks on the door of another silo!

From the video, I thought it was interesting that the airlock doors of some silos were covered over with dust, implying that their 10,000 people did not survive. I'm also guessing each silo started off with exactly 10,000 people.

The actress Harriet Walter who plays Walker (get it?) deserves some awards.

The production values were amazing. So much CGI that blends in seamlessly and goes unnoticed, in a TV show at that.

I think it's so they'll clean the cameras. If you've never seen the world that is being shown, you are overwhelmed and think everyone needs to see it. So those that are in the silo need reassurance that the world isn't inhabitable and therefore their "place" is in the Silo. Just my opinion.

This is what I have gathered from the different cleanings. The people in the silo see the real outside world on the displays. Cleaners are shown through their helmet a computer generated green landscape. They then believe the world is okay and their theory of a better outside is verified. They then want to clean the camera to show everybody what they see. However, when they clean the camera they actually show everybody the outside still sucks.

Binged this in about a week thanks to the clever Apple TV + Twitter episode released. I'm currently about 40 pgs into WOOL now!

  • Rebecca Ferguson is bow-chica-wow-wow.
  • Always like watching Will Patton on screen
  • Comm'on ! is hit or miss with me. Most times I feel like he's running his lines like a commercial. His janitor fit was fire though.
  • Also enjoyed Tim Robbins

Can't believe you guys are still debating the ending - it was pretty clear that the Green world was merely a filter that was run by IT to self-fulfill their continued delusion. Once a cleaner steps outside - they're compelled to clean to show the Silo-ers it's okay to come outside, only then to suffocate in the real dystopian world.

Hopefully we get season 2 quicker than Severance Season 2!
